Hornet's Last Stand - RAF_Leigh - 04.12.2008
The Aircraft carrier USS Hornet CV-8 is a Yorktown class carrier, The Hornet has been used since the start of the war, from the Doolittle Raid and Midway, suffering no damage she look like it was calm sailing.
On October 26th 1942 at the Battle of Santa Cruz the ship came under heavy attack by Japanese naval air forces. In a 15 minute period the USS Hornet took massive damage with three bomb hits by the Aichi D3A "Val" dive bombers. She then took two torpedo hits and one more "Val" smashing into the flight deck. A tow was ordered to tow the crippled carrier out of harms way but in this time 2 more hits from B5N "Kate"s and a abandon ship was ordered.
The sinking carrier did not want to go down The USN ordered a scuttling of the carrier. Two destroyers pumped 400 5in shells into the carrier and 9 torpedoes. But the stubborn carrier did not want to go down. The Japanese naval forces came and finished her off with 4 massive 24in torpedoes at 01:35 October 27th 1942.
This is a tribute of a great carrier and all the men who served on her.

Very nice, where did you get that water?
By the way, the description says she was finished off with 24in shells - what are these (not shells methinks)?

Leigh, I see you changed 'shells' for 'torpedoes' - these ones I guess:

Impressive weapons, if a bit scary for the users...
