Modding combat models for specific bomber types?? - mandrill7 - 13.12.2008
As a mission designer, I've noticed that there are different types of "behaviour" hard-coded for specific different types of bombers. A-20's and B-25's have an "attack plane" model and they will strafe and buzz any ground target. Essentially, they will behave like big P-47's.
B-17's and Il-4's will not do this. Instead, they will fly nice and level and drop their bombs and then fly straight off.
Ju-88's and Pe-2's have a dive bomber model and will jink and bob a little before releasing their bombs. For this reason, you cannot use the Ju-88 as a low level attack plane as the entire schwarm will pile into the ground or sea as they take their attack positions. (Believe me, I've tried to get them NOT to do this. My efforts failed. I used He-111's in the low level mission instead.)
Has anyone figured out how to manipulate this coding to allow Ju-88's to be successful torpedo bombers, or A-20's to just drop their ordinance and fly straight on? (In the latter case, you can "sort of" tailor a mission to reduce this tendency to repeatedly strafe, but man, is it hard work!)

good god, if we could get the B-17 ai into B-25s and A-20s, we might be able to make a semi-respectable strafer. At least it would drop and fly on, and not do back flips and rolls and whatever else the screwy ai wants

I might be wrong, but this site is about modding every thing EXCEPT FM's and weapons. If I wrong I'm someone will correct me.

this maybe a non mod fix. if i remember correctly you can edit the behavior of them. some of the campagin files we used to edit them to do as you said. we needed b-25's to act correctly (strafe).
This should be a fairly easy thing to do.

this should be resolved by modding Ai behavior and not by messing with FM .... aircraft simply "calls" different routine for Ai behavior . So no rules would be broken here

It really annoys me when Ju-88s try to act like ground attack aircraft!! It has ruined some good missions. Also, it annoys me when A-20s and B-25s engage fighters. In one mission, a dogfight contained a huge furball of A-20s, Ju-87s, B-25s, P-40s and Bf-109s, all going nuts at each other. Very hectic and not very realistic.
I'd imagine it would be too difficult to change the routine, a little bit of code substitution. I failed programming at uni, so I would know where to start!

in my post i said it was a non mod fix. i meant that we used to change the behavior of the AC 4 years ago, way before modding was possible. i've seen it before. i've done it before. This was long ago back before i learned to hate the AI .

Try getting Ju-88's to level bomb a ship at 1000m or less or ground attack a train. The first Ju-88 will complete the mission. But the others will all plow into the ground or sea and wreck themselves. Apparently, the ai behaviour code causes them to jink up and down while on the attack run and the subsequent Ju's will all crash.
I've tried working around this a few times and never with any success. The only thing to do is substitute other a/c or else take the Ju's up to dive bombing height.
