What does it mean to backup files, and how do you do it?

when I want to download mod activator it says to backup your 1946 file and I dont know what they mean.

basically means to make a copy of your il2 install.
then if you install a mod and for some reason it stops your game from working and you cant fix it, you have a backup and wont have to do a clean install.
I learned this the hard way, i think ive intalled il2 about 3 times on this machine

Before I install any mod I extract the files to a temp folder on desktop, and look to see what files, if any, are going to be overwritten. Then I make sure I have a backup of those files before going any further.
I also use Jonesoft Generic Mod Enabler which is now AAA mod compatible. (never used to be).

Change the default mods folder to XODS when you set it up, to avoid a clash with the AAA MODS folder.
