The real handy man's tool box contains only two items, duct tape and WD-40.
If it moves and it shouldn't, use duct tape.
If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40.

Simon,
I ran into the same problem with my Samsung 906BW monitor. I taped it onto the top of the monitor.
I just bought a new Samsung T220 monitor. It has a bezel around the edge instead of a flat surface to tape the trackIR. Plus, I didn't want to put tape on the top of this new monitor after seeing how much residue the tape left on my old 906BW.
Here's what I rigged up. It is a bit excessive, but it works. Looking around the house, I found a piece of PVC pipe and an old microphone desk stand. I know, not many people happen to have a spare desk mic stand around the house. In the US, you can buy a desk mic stand relatively cheap at Radio Shack ($13 US). They have a very sturdy and heavy base.

The PVC pipe was around 1-inch thick. I cut a length to be slightly taller than the monitor.
Run the USB wire from the TrackIR down the PVC pipe. Slide the pipe on top of the mic stand's post (there is enough room for the wire and the stand). Tape the TrackIR to the top of the pipe.
Now the TrackIR has its own stand. No more tape or sticky residue on your monitor.
Just an idea.
