Uploaded for testing: increased object visibility distance - lowfighter - 24.01.2009

WARNING: it seems that if a host X has this mod enabled, players which don't have the mod can't join the game hosted by X! Onliners BEWARE!

This is a limited set of objects with adjusted popup distance namely all the Pacific objects and all the German ones

Download:

http://rapidshare.com/files/188636176/o ... bility.rar

From readme:
Place folder "objects_visibility" in "il2root/mods" folder
If you want to disable the whole mod navigate inside "objects_visibility" and rename "3do" folder, for example rename it to "X3do". If you want to disable the mod for a particular object rename the folder of that object for example rename "CityBlock1" to "XCityBlock1". If you want to disable the mod for all palms navigate to il2root/mods/ objects_visibility/3do/flora/ and rename folder "Palms" to "Xpalms"
Recomended maps for testing: Berlin summer, Ardennes summer, Balaton summer, Kyushu, Okinawa, Burma.
Not all objects which show on these maps are present in this mod, for example the "old industry" ones are not moded.
Test at different altitudes flying over towns villages and airfields. Switch back and forth from unmoded to moded.
Unfortunately I can't yet adjust visibility for the trees in towns and villages so those pop up at default distance, and this is disturbing.
On Berlin map i have very bad FPS over Frankfurt an der Oder (and it's to be expected the same over Berlin itself)

I LOVE YOU!

Hey Lowfighter

I had been following your post on this from before but just havn't had the time to adjust anything and try it,so I copied the info to my notes as usual.

This is excellent though,I'll be trying this awesome little package out today thanks

Thanks M8s,
I'll come tomorrow with more thoughts/observations and I'd like some feedback, and i'd like you try to tweak it yourselves

Thanks lowfighter, very interesting, and something that could increase the immersion level of IL-2 exponentially.

I'll upload some more soon but for now some comments:

1. Most objects in this visibility pack if placed in a MISSION have a visibility in game of about 6-7 Km.
2. However the same objects but which are incorporated in a map have a different behavior.
If I approach a town for example at low altitude the objects pop up at about 4 Km (instead of 6-7 Km). But now happens something funny if I approach the town at higher altitude, say 3 Km. In this case objects pop up when I have a HORIZONTAL separation of about 4 Km, so that means they would pop up at total distance POPUP=squareroot (H^2+V^2)=squareroot(4^2+3^2)=5 Km. If you go at even higher altitude the H decreases slowly but the total visibility distance increases, so for example if you fly at 7 Km altitude you'll still see buildings under you.
3. Rule 2 is violated if objects embedded on the map are close to rail and airfield plates, in this case the horisontal popup distance H is higher and it reaches 6-7 Km, the objects behave like at 1.
4. The palms are terrible objects because the mesh is complicated, you'll have big FPS loss if flying over many of them. On Burma map they are placed very economically and so FPS is quite OK..Same if you test on MTO map. I have to check on other mod maps too.

I flew Berlin and Okinawa last night a bit,Berlin I think I gained a few fps
it's still really unflyable for me though as it drops down to 15 to 16 fps around there.
The airfield there though is on the edge of the city and once over it I was back to 45 to 60 fps.
The airfield buildings popped up and stayed that way as long as I was only up to about 5 to 7 kms away.Really nice at a higher Altitude as they seem to stay popped up longer I think.

Okinawa I really liked it , the houses popped up at a greater distance away as I am use to ,
usually I am almost right on top of the town then POP goes the houses. They seemed to pop up smoother for me I think also, more fluid like and then as long as I kept the town in site they seemed to stay popped up for me,although the tree's would pop up then dissapper ,then pop up and dissapper as the houses just stayed there for me to see the whole time.

Overflying the countryside on both Berlin and Okinawa the dark green patches of tree's still seemed to wait until I was right overtop of them ,then Pop ...they would appear.Really never seemed to relate to any differance with my tree's.

The buildings though I am pretty sure I seen a huge improvement ,I usally do ground attack using the magnification view and it was nice seeing the buildings not so much as Pop up , but they seemed to fluidly draw themselves out for me rather than that actual Pop Up look that I am use to seeing.Maybe by popping up at a greater distance they seem to draw smoother.

I never spent a lot of time flying ,but I did go back and forth once enabling and disabling your Mod Lowfighter and I swear I see a nice improvement to my buildings or houses popping up.

I was going to fly a few more maps later today and really check it out a little more thoroughly.
All my flight 's were at 500 m first pass then 1000 second pass and at 3000 third pass.As long as I stayed with in site of the buildings ( 5 to 7 km) they actually didn't pop up and down like I am use to seeing.

I'll let you know what I notice later today, thanks

Thanks friend for testing!
You're right the trees are a problem which bugs me too a lot(two problems in fact, one for forest=2 and one for forest=3 in conf.ini) unsolved yet, I really hope to solve it, maybe "with a little help from my friends"

- Redwulf__32 - 25.01.2009

Hi lowfighter,

A much needed mod. Tested it yesterday on my WIP Denmark map with stunning results. However, we had a Redwulf for a Day event last night and for some mysterious reason no one could get in the dogfight room I was hosting until I disabled your mod (the others did not have this mod installed), we tried 3 times with same result until I tried disabling it. :?:

Just info, you might want to look into it (personally, I see absolutely no reason why this should happen, you've only modified object descriptors - no code stuff - if I'm not mistaken).

Don't get me wrong, no critisism (I'm a coder IRL myself, I feel your pain 8) ). This mod's time has come, PC specs have skyrocketed since IL2 was released, it's a whole different ballgame today.

- lowfighter - 26.01.2009

Thanks Redwulf for pointing to the bugger!

I'll write a warning in the first post. I have no idea, I'm an offliner and I don't know what differences is game accepting when online. When I'm done with all the objects I want to introduce in the mod, maybe I'll start a topic about solving this problem, I sure can't solve it

- Redwulf__32 - 04.02.2009

Think I found the problem:

Excerpt from my log.lst

[8:24:13] INTERNAL ERROR: Wrong # of neigbours of vertices in 3do/Buildings/Pacific/Hangar_PBY/Live.msh
[8:24:13] WARNING: object '3do/Buildings/Pacific/Hangar_PBY/Live.msh' of class 'SkinTL' not loaded
[8:24:13] INTERNAL ERROR: MeshObj: Can't load mesh 3do/Buildings/Pacific/Hangar_PBY/Live.msh

[8:24:13] com.maddox.il2.engine.GObjException: Mesh 3do/Buildings/Pacific/Hangar_PBY/live.sim not created

Obviously something wrong with the Hanger_PBY mesh file is causing the issue.

Disabling the mod does not give the above errors and warnings (Hanger_PBY also appears).

Hope this helps.....

- Maxisonfire - 09.02.2009

Yeah, Redwulf is right. The folder MODS\objects_visibility\3do\Buildings\Pacific\Hangar_PBY is causing problems. Before disabling this folder i couldn't save missions in Norway map, also my static campaigns in norway and mrz_malta maps were unsaveable. Without Hangar_PBY folder the mod works perfectly.

- Saburo Sakai - 05.06.2009

is there any chance of this mod being expanded for all objects? this is just what i have been looking for and i think that most of the community here will benefit from this mod.

i for one hate seeing objects pop up when i am 500 mtrs away and would love to see them rendered from a distance, like long before i get to them Big Grin
