Hi Guys,

As stated I'm looking for another AGP card (I don't want to update board as I run C2Duo already).

I know the 1950 Pro should be the bees knees of ATI AGP cards, but if I go to the "Dark Side"

can I get something even better in AGP?

Please, no Fanboys or Flamewars, just facts.

I think your best bet if you want to stick with AGP is the ATI 3850 AGP. My X1950 Pro died a couple of months ago and I had a similar dilema. Given the limited availabliity of AGP cards nowadays I was left with the options of: replacing the X1950 with a 2nd hand card off ebay, buying a 3850 for a decent premium over the PCI equivalent or going the whole hog and upgrading the entire system to PCI. I went with the latter.

I looked at the current Nvidia AGP offerings and they appear to be out of the game. You might have better luck 2nd hand but nothing they had available new was even comparable to the X1950 Pro.

Coming to much the same conclusion, the 7950GT looks the closest spec to the 1950 but haven't heard lots of enthusiasm in posts on boards.

How does the 3850 compare to the 1950? Time to surf the forums again :?

Recently I read a similar thread in a Bulgarian hardware forum - well, the 3850 should be better than the 1950 , though probably not by much with AA turned on. Otherwise, it should smoke the older ATI card (I'm using an 1650PRO and I've compared it to the 3650 , the HD3000 series are simply better and faster than the x1000).

Otherwise, a new mobo and either an HD3870 or HD4670, or an nVidia 9000GT all with 512mb DDR3 memory should be enough and you won't have to spend a lot.

I got that exact card to, it's actually only a few months old, but if your's fried i would def go with PCI since your Mobo supports it. I am still on an old P4 3.0E single core. I am very happy with my Gforce 7600GT for the AGP 8x with 2 mb ram.

I can run in perfect with more than 60fps. Just tweaked shadows, effects, calm water and object popup distance.
It has some trouble with some really chunky mods and lots of traffic in the air but it runs well for an AGP. If you want no slow downs at all and capable of running all mods then you should go to PCI cards.
The 7600GT was designed for PCI but they made AGP versions too. High performances requires PCI cards.

Found a really nice AGP card that would fit the bill,

a HIS HD 3850 IceQ 512mb 256bit DDDr3 card. O/clocked from standard with nice cooling.

Only prob is I can't find one in Aussie and the guys at Amazon & Newegg won't send one out of America.

They're teasing me , Dammit Cry

I had a 7950GT PCIe and it was a great card for IL2. There was an AGP version, but I think it will be hard to find as the 7950 was the last of the DX9 cards and they were not in production for very long.

I have a Sapphire 3850 AGP and it seem to be a great card so far. I think it is towards the higher end of what you can get that is the next rung under the PCIe cards.
