Request: Rice paddies for asian maps - chas1963 - 25.01.2009
A really key geographical image for Asia is the rice paddy...be it flooded or near harvest, from Java, China and Burma to Japan it is an ubiquitous symbol of the countryside. IMO the "IL2 1946" maps have yet to capture the true flavor of the Asian rice field...
I would love to see some one mod this aspect of the Asian landscape...I don't know if someone would have to create a new map, or if their is anyway to create new bumpmap/textures (I don't even know if its possible) but it would really add to the mystique of the landscape.
Thanks...

yeah, this would really make a difference.

the landscape can't be made that detailed...
but perhaps a 3d object for the hillsides is possible.

As the textures are tga's I wonder if a water effect can be added in a manner similar to those seen in TW models (reflective P-47 base skin seen below). Or in our case, via the Layer0,1,2,3 etc. slots in the .mat files

I kind of had the feeling that, that could be the case... I was just hoping that some clever modding genius might figure out a better solution to how that landscape feature was seen in-game then what we have now. The rice paddy (flatland & terraced hillside) is such a dominant landscape feature through out rural Asia (over which we do much of our 1940's flying) that I always feel that something is missing on our maps. Thanks

Please modders do this mod ,so I can finally fulfill my dream of crash landing into one!

Some more pictures in a "bump"
p.s. IMO the colors have never been right on most of the "Asian" maps...

Instant topographic map's

Some of Canonuk's BoB map textures do this for me. I think its because I have to run in 16bit colour and low landscape detail to get the frame rates up. It looks like most of the area around London is flooded, ponds of water everywhere. When you get down to ~100m you can see that it is actually the ground texture becoming transparent and you can see the underlying water texture.
In short the low lying paddy fields are probably do-able

Leady - weird!
Chas - It's probably not possible because of the way the game handles heights (on map_h) - you can't get steep height changes, especially over small distances. Each point of height data is 200m from it's neighbours.

Interesting, and thanks for a reply. If you have the time...could I pick your brain on a couple of quick questions?
Ok, terrest hillsides are not possible, I can see that from your reply. I assume that (maybe) a flat ground texture could be created with reflective water(?). Is their any restriction's for ground water that could limit the superficial simulation of the flooded rice field effect? I understand that all water must be at ground level? I have seen water with trees in it on jungle maps... Could one create a large area of water that had "flat" (non-reflective) earth colored grid-like shape "over it"? Trying to create the effect of flooded rice field with foot-paths... I was thinking that very shallow water with colors of green and brown under the water could simulate the patchwork character of rice fields from above....
Thanks in advance...
