[MOD] Flak Shrapnel Sound Mod - Alan - 30.01.2009

Hi Gents,

Thought I would share my humble mod with all.

Now when you fly through flak you will hear the shrapnel hitting your plane. It will not cause any damage to your plane

Yes, very interesting!
But will your mod works with Slikks Battle Sounds Mod http://allaircraftsimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11790 or will it be incompatible?

- Alan - 30.01.2009

JG53: You should hear something most of the time when the large flak pops near to you.

King Franky: I did not try "Battle Sounds Mod" cause the file was too large for me to download. I have only made changes to the flak sound file. If "Battle Sounds Mod" did change the same sound file then their mod would simply overwrite mine. If you wanted to retest my file after installing "Battle Sounds Mod", then just change the sound file as explained in my "Readme".

Thanks Alan, this is one of my biggest gripes is that when I'm flying in flak I can't hear it, I'll let you know...

- Doolittle81 - 30.01.2009

I was wondering how much Flak noise could actually have been heard above the roar of the engines....So, a quick google got this personal account in a letter written at the time by a B17 crewmember/combat Photographer:

Quote:...Then the bomb bay doors swing open and we are on the bomb run. Flak bursting all around and our ship speeding in a bumpy fashion which is caused by the flak bursting entirely too close for comfort but still no damage to the ship...
...
At that second the ship jumped straight up several feet it seemed, and a sound like rocks on a tin roof filled my ears, even above the roar of the engines,, which at this point were turning over as fast as they possibly could. I felt my camera jump and saw fire fly from the front of it. I took the camera from my eye and could see light beaming through several places in the plane where flak had come through.
...
...

Both engines still purring, a very pleasing sound to anyone's ears, with the only other sound the shells going off at both sides of us. The sound of flak still leaving scars on the plane was to be heard constantly. At this point it was too late to worry, but not too late to think of a way out if the pilot gives the word, and hoping he maneuvers her out of the guns' range. This continued for minutes, it seems, but really only seconds.

Can you please put the MOD file up at Filefront. Mediafire is a pain with its registration requirement and endless PopUp Ads...

Thanks.

- Alan - 30.01.2009

Thanks for sharing your research Doolittle. I always kind of imagined it like that myself.

File now with filefront. Idea Big Grin

Battle_Sounds

I have Slikk's mod and yes, this mod over-writes two of Slikk's sounds which over-wrote those same two in IL-2 1946\Files\Samples.

Back 'em up and try 'em out!

S~

Oki doke, Thanks for the info!

I will try it out.

Hey Alan,
Thanks a lot for these flak hit sounds, very good effects.--rclark--

Thanks rclark Big Grin

Hope someone could come up with a better version though... Idea

I could since I worked as a soung engineer. I downloaded the files and didn't try em in the game since I thought we would hear shrapnel at every flak explosion. Am I right? If there's a way to hear the shrapnel only when the explosions are close to us I gonna work on it if you want me to. And if I have to work on it, is it possible to have the sounds separated so I can work on the tracks independently? Otherwise I would have to work from scratch. And to have a good sound adjustment, do you know if the game use a normalized track? (with the highest sound peak to 0db) That's a question I could answer myself by looking at it in Nuendo, but if you had the answer already it could help me if I have to start over.

edit: I forgot to add that I like the explosion sound, but the shrapnel sound needs to be worked on. A simple pitch edit could make it sound much better. That being said, great idea and nice samples. I don't know if you made them yourself but if you did, you did some good work there.

And I thought about it, even if there's no way to hear the shrapnel only when the explosions occurs right beside our plane, if we would use 1 sample with it, and the other without it, it could simulate the randomization of the shrapnel. Like I said, I'm talking without even trying it in-game. I just listened to it in winamp, so I don't really know if this issue happens in-game. I'll have to try it tonight.

This mod cancels out two of the explosion sounds in the Battle Sounds mod.

Quote: I downloaded the files and didn't try em in the game since I thought we would hear shrapnel at every flak explosion. Am I right?

Yes you are right.
I tried this mod out, and although it is good in theory, I did not like the fact that I could hear the shrapnel impact sound at the end of the sample even though the explosion was clearly out of range of my plane.

Quote:If there's a way to hear the shrapnel only when the explosions are close to us

This is how the game works already. If the flack is close enough to you, and debris from the explosion hits your plain, the game triggers a sound that dose what this mod is simulating. The problem with this mod is that it simulates the impact of your plane being hit by flack every time the sample is triggered. With this mod there is no way around it; you will hear the impact of your plane being hit by flack every time the samples in this mod are triggered. This is alright if the explosion is within close range of your plain, but I could still hear it even though the explosion was far off in the distance.

Now that I think of it, maybe the reason that I hear the impact at further range is probably because I tested this mod with the Battle Sounds mod running as well. The Battle Sounds mod enables you to hear explosions at greater range than the stock game, so if you are not using the Battle Sounds mod, the impact of your plain being hit by flack when the explosion is out of range may not be a problem.

Hey ya Lads Big Grin

Thanks for taking an interest in this little mod

Sorry CAF, I cannot take credit for the sounds. I simply took sounds already existing in the game and re-mixed them. I have been searching a long time for this effect, but when none was available I thought I would just experiement with this idea. I agree that the shrapnel sound could be improved. I was also thinking it should sound more like a shovel-full of hail being thrown hard against a tin roof. So it would be interesting if you could try to mod this part of the sound. Idea

As the sound is linked to the flak sound you will only hear the effect when the 2 types of flak explodes near to your cokpit - this create some randomness (assuming you are inside the cockpit and not using other mods such as Slikks battle sound mod.) I changed the shrapnel sound in each file so that it does not sound repetative while at the same time making it sound that many pieces of shrapnell are striking your plane. I think if you were to mod the shrapnel as above then the second shrapnel sound would not be required to keep the effect more random.

Yea Slikk, you are correct, but the game uses the same sound used when your plane is hit by a bullet for this effect. (Im not sure, but I believe this sound is also associated with some battle damage). Im trying to get the sound effect of a car driving though a short burst of hail - This is what you would hear when you are far enough from the flak to avoid damage, but would hear the falling shrapnel "raining down" on your plane.

Yip, right again, you sould have a nice effect if you can reduce the distance at which you can hear the flak just to try it out, but unfortunatly this would screw up your cool mod.

There's no problem. Anyway that's what I was going for. I should finish that next week, but I can start working on this only from next thursday. I got a busy schedule until then. You'll receive the first versions next weekend.

I tried to find the stock shrapnel sound in-game but I found 2 files that sounds pretty similar. It would be great to know which one of these is the flak related sound.

-exp2_54_1.wav
-exp3_11.wav

Slikk, I don't know if you would like to work on the coding part of the mod. If we could hear the flak from a little bit farther than the stock game, that would be great. And also, I don't know if it's possible to change this, if we could trigger the shrapnel sound effect from a slightly larger radius, without touching to the damage of course, I'm sure it would give a nice ambiance boost. After getting those mods I would fine tune the timing on the explosions and shrapnel wavs so it sounds realistic.
