Thanks for sharing ,interesting stuff.
From what I gather airfields during WWI were no more than open fields with tents and
a few structures.

Some airfields still are. The dependence on runways is a major vulnerability for military aircraft and thats why all sorts of solutions were attempted - float-fighters, highways, dispersed squadrons, VTOL, etc. Some worked, some didn't.
