Hey
I have the TrackIR4 Pro, and I uses a cap because I usually don't play with headset.
It is just fine but if you play for long it can be maybe a little irratating.
If you use a headset I think you should buy the one which are able to sit on the headset, but I don't know if it works as good as the normal, I don't see why it shouldn't.

No a hat person myself.
But it mounts nicely on my headset.
No problems as for its working properly.
And no, its just a demo picture - my head is not crooked

"The one that sits on the headset"(well, at least one of those things) is TrackClip Pro.
As you can see it's a clip with three ir-leds, takes its power from USB. The leds are much brighter than any reflective stickers or caps, and hence tracking also works better. I use this because I play with a headset anyway, and this is light enough to go as a part of the headset. No caps or anything else extra to wear 8)
If you don't want to go with a full TIR package you can always get a Trackclip pro, a webcam, and this free program:
Freetrack. This setup works really well and costs a lot less.
