few questions from a beginner - rbuchner - 17.02.2009
Hi,
I tried to find the answers but no luck so far. Here I go;
I have the unmodded version of Il2, the 4.08, which I play online only.
1- If I install those mods, will I be allowed to play on some servers I use to, which uses the 4.08?
2- Due the high ammount of mods available, how am I be synchronized with the servers allowed mods?
3- are the mods reversible? I mean, if something goes wrong, can I undo the mod install and return to my good old 4.08 ?
4- are the mods performance oriented? or just eye candy?
Is there an easy install for it? I mean, one installer that will handle everything? Or is it a multitude of small installs made one by one?
thank you for your time, and forgive me if these answers were posted before.

Welcome to the dark side!
1 - You will still be able to play on your favourite servers ONLY IF they do NOT have CRT=2 activated. It will generally tell you this in the server description in Hyperlobby.
2 - Apparently UI 1.1 synchronises all your mods with the server. You will find the section to download this on the main page. I don't run it due to poor internet and the lack of a bit torrent (hint hint).
3 - Yes, the mods are reversible with the Mod Switcher.
4 - If you mean are there mods to give an increase in performance, actually, I'm not entirely sure. If you mean do some mods have a negative performance hit then yes, some of them will, particularly things like flak effects, smoke trails, fire etc.
Good luck!

1: unless otherwise stated, most servers on HL don't allow mods, however, you can download the mod switcher, which essentially turns the mods on and off. Conversely, most Coops allow mods for some reason, and most Squadrons that use mods will say so. Additionally, many people use mods offline, but choose for one reason or another not to use them online. Its up to you.
2: you don't have to have the same mods as the server, the server just has to allow mods, however, there are a few exeptions, but wherever you download the mod, it will usually make this very clear. As far as I am aware, the only ones like this are the carrier AI takeoff mod, and the moving objects in dogfights mod
3:yes, most mods are just a folder that is placed in a mods folder. to disable the mod, place a "-" in front of the folder name, turning the mod "mod_name" into "-mod_name". to remove permanently, just delete the folder. Mods that have a self installer almost alwas come with a self uninstaller, thee only ones that can't be removed are not in folder form are generally more difficult to install as you will have to manually place files in different places, so its pretty hard to not identify the ones that can't be removed.
4: some are performance related, like new planes, new ships, etc. one of our most important rules here however is that no mod is allowed to edit the characheristics of a plane that came with the origional game.
5: yes, you can download the Unified installer, it can be found
here. it only includes non beta mods, so not everything has been included, but you can alwas take a look through the betas and download them individually if you like.
hope I helped. You can PM me if you like with additional questions, and I'll help best I can.
