The filters and effects with Photoshop are a lot of fun. Keep playing with them and you'll find something you'll like.

Try using the dodge and burn tools to make nice lighting effects, the blur tool to get rid of rough edges(subtle use) and try to change the settings when you apply a filter so that the result is more subtle.

It gets more fun as you get more familiar with your tools!

Instead of covering your speedbar at the bottom when you edit, try turning it off completely when you take your screenies. That will say you a little work.
