Hello,
I was wondering for a little thing for too long ago:
Under some US wings (F4U, P-51,...) there are some "lights" red green and yellow.
Can someone tell me what their stand for?

I think they are to show the airspeed to the paddle-director on the flight deck of the carrier, when in final approach.

I was told once they are for ground crew, the different lights are on at different times to show whether it needs servicing etc...

I might as well join in...
I was told that they were lights to signal aliens, telling them that they could abduct the pilot and use The ProbeZ on them.

Hi guys, Renmik is right they are identification lights.
In the P51 there is a switch box on the right cockpit wall with toggle switches for the individual coloured lights. The lights are switched on or off to show a particular pattern as required for ID, I think to prevent aa gunners shooting at their own, since it is the underside of the aircraft they will see.
I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will jump on here and tell us.
