[3DS Max] Help! My file won't open! - Hawkman - 22.03.2009

Hello folks,

I've been working on a new a/c model for some weeks now - I'm using MAX 9 (32-bit). Last night after working on my project, I saved the scene as usual. However, a little later, I went back to open the file, I got the message : file failed to open. Despite repeated attempts, I have the same problem. I scanned the file for viruses (nothing appears to have infected it), tried copying the file and opening that, but still the same problem. It's very annoying because a lot of work has gone into this, and I don't have an original backup of the scene. Have any other MAX users had this problem before? Is there a way to fix this? Hoping somebody has an answer to this, or I face having to start the whole project again from scratch Cry

Thanks in advance

Have you tried opening the *.max file in Deep Exploration 5?
-- or is there a recovered file available to open?

I'm pretty sure Max has an autobackup/save feature. It saves the file in a folder in the root dir of max.

This is an issue that I find happens often... I always save any project twice... To help prevent this you can either save your project in a series (ie ProjectA1.max, ProjectA2.max, ProjectA3.Max and so on) or there are pluggins that autosave into a backup file... etc etc... Personally, I save the progressive type so if this happens (I'm upto Whirlwind66 ATM...), or if I stuff up and break something - I can go back to any stage in the build and go from there.

Now, lession over, Max DOES autoback up the saves... Upto 3 in a row... Go to your documents, find the Max folder, in side that there should be a AUTOBACK folder with three .max's in it... One of those, hopefully, should be one of your latest saves.

Chaps - many, many thanks for your help - problem solved Big Grin

Magpie - you were right. I found it (thank God) right where you said it would be.

Lesson learned - from now on, separate saves will be the only way forward.

Thanks a bunch, guys Big Grin
