TBM-3 Avenger - RAF_Swede - 31.03.2009
Hiya
Well I just got on board with Mods and I'm enjoying it all very much. Thanks for all the hard work!!
Just wondering though... Has anyone ever tried landing a TBM-3 on a carrier?? Man, its hard enough just landing one on a runway..
Is there any fixes in the future for this one?
Thanks

Trim is your friend

I find she is a real bitch to trim! Needs constant attention.

training training and training...
Drop all bombs, droptanks and shoot rockets out
arresting hook down of course
gear, flaps and low speed
low prop pitch so you can use 90% gas to stay in the air
dont try to land if you're in bad position

Any changes to power settings require re trimming. TRIM! Here you must be properly trimmed out at all times and under all flight conditions. Once set this plane will fly very straight and comfortably. If you want to land on a carrier I suggest this exercise before hand.
At 500 to 1000 feet set the aircraft to landing configuration. Flaps down, hook down and gear down. Open the radiator fully and set your prop RPM to 100%. Now reduce throttle to about 40% and fly straight and level. Then TRIM the aircraft to fly hands off. You should be at about 90 knots in level maintained flight. You are ready to land. Reduce throttle to maintain speed as you descend and compensate with some rudder for the reduced torque. This plane is far more sensitive to this than any other in the simulator.
Using gentle control inputs maneuver to landing. I presume you're already a competent carrier pilot. SO I'll skip that.

Well,
I can land any aircraft in IL2 comfortably on landing strips, but I am much less succesful on carrier landing.
Thanks for useful instructions.
Please, which plane is the easiest to land on carrier?

The stability problem on TBF/M, B5N,B6N planes is FM bug,for example a part of TBF FM file:

The easiest aircraft to trap on US carriers is the SBD Dauntless or the IJN carriers the Aichi D5a Val. Wildcat's are nice too. But the same rules apply!

I used to speak french so I'm not 100% good in english. Maybe you can help me with that sentence :
We are even dubious about cloning fixing here now...
But I'm just asking, it's sad that those plane have such a bad FM

Roughly translated:
We would probably not make a "TBM-3 the way it should have been, if it was fixed" slot plane.

Reduce throttle to maintain speed as you descend ....Throttle is used(when landing)to maintain your
rate of decent...not your speed.
