Mayday, vcard down! - reflected - 02.04.2009
Hi all,
I have a soo very frustrating porblem: I have a rather good PC: c2d 2,66, 2G RAM, GeForce8800 GTS 512. LAst summer it started to freeze, I needed to restart, and when it rebooted, it forgot the Vcard. It said "Please update the display driver program". OK, I've installed the new driver, and everything was OK until the next freeze. I had enough, I brought it back to the shop, under warranty, but after a week of testing it worked fine for them. I brought it back, but the problem occured more and more often. 3 weeks ago it freezed because of simply playing a youtube video. Not only Il2, but BoB2 as well, so it's not the install of il2 I suppose, and I had to reinstall il2 in october so I guess it's not the game. So this time I couldn't even install any driver, it didn't accept anything...back to the shop, new driver, testing, worked fine, back home, and here we go again. It freezes, and it also does some nice texture mess-up:
What the hell's wrong???? Is there anything that can cause the problem at home, but not in the shop? TrackIR? The joystick? the plug in the wall? Or is the shop playing with me, and I need to kick some @sses to get my vcard changed for a new one?
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a nasty problem, reflected. :o
I'm just curious as to the screenshot. Is that what happens when it freezes up? It just looks like you're using the wrong skin for that Spit....or is the skin normal until freeze-up happens?
Sorry I don't have any advice at this point...

OF course it's the good skin...sometimes all the transparent textures become pink....

your card is too hot
-try to put a better fan
-download rivatuner and put the fan to 100%
-with rivatuner lower the core and/or memory clock
Usually all GPU are making that when they are hot
good luck

I'm not sure ,check your disk , the freezes and texture mix I had last year, it took more than 3 months before the tech shop found the error in the cables to my WD raptor disc , the cable was half broken so it worked but the other day it didn't [crashes, freezes and tex errors...],the stupid thing is you can't see it from the outside,.....

I'll try to put the fan control from auto to 100% and see if it occurs again. The temperature was 78 C when I took this lovely shot.
Otherwise, can it be the 230V cable or the plug in the wall maybe?
thanks for your help!

-78 is hot for these "old cards"
it can be the wall's plug but I wouldn bet on that
BUT
it can also be your PSU that is dying...
wich one do you have??
- reflected - 02.04.2009
erm...what's a PSU?

Power Suplie Unit
The big box in your PC that is plugged to the wall and connected to all your parts in your case
If you can tell wich brand, wattage and how old it could help
- reflected - 02.04.2009
Ah ok, I'll check and see! It's not old, maybe a year old (or two? damn time's running fast)
I'll tell you the brand and the watt as well when I get home!
So let's see the possiblities:
1: fan - to check: set it to 100% - if it solves it, I'll go to the shop to get a new one
2
SU - I don't know how to check if that's the reason - if it is, I'll go to the shop, and get a new one
3: ??? should I try a different plug in the wall?

1- you could check the fan AND, like I said, download rivatuner and downclock your 3d card (really easy, juste move a slidder and click apply... default value wont change if you dont safe....)
2-only way to test it is to test an other one, but if you have a good PSU, it's not likely that...
3- you could try an other plug, but I dont know how is the current in europe.... I know here its 110v and pretty stable so.....
4-do u have an other card(or do you know someone with an other nvidia card). best way to check it
EDIT: link to rivatuner

I'm going to sleep cause it's 5 in the morning
Hope you'll be able to fix your prob
Oh and by the way, love your biggen hill campagn

from the screen shot it looks like you've got the wrong skin for that aircraft. It looks like nothing to do with the graphics card, the skin issue at least. Make sure you have the correct skin for the correct aircraft, as i've had the issue before, trying to see if skins for one aircraft (a particular hurri) worked with another hurri (sadly not, with much the same results.)

Thanks for your help genbrien!
Moggy, I use the correct skin, I made it myself, and it worked fine since forever. as I said before, sometimes the transparent textures turn pink, and such things happen..

I'm sorry then, i don't know. That was what it looked like it could have been. Good luck fixing it!

the shop just wrote me that they have tested every part of my PC one by one, so they suggest a windows re-install, and re-testing them after it....hmm...
