Level flight for Axis and Soviet planes? - dorkfish - 16.04.2009

I fly the 109 most of the time when I play IL-2. As I understand it, the ailerons were adjusted on the ground by the crew. Ironically, the American planes fly level on IL-2 hands off, but do have aileron trim.

My question: It this normal?

Bank indicator after only ten seconds of hands off flight starting from level. Same with all the Japanese and Soviet fighters. (that I have played.)

If it is normal, can anything be done to correct this?

The fixed trim were trimmed for a specific speed thus a specific power setting at a specific altitude.
Use the rudder to keep the ball centered.

Thanks, but the the rudder is a different axis. I can use the rudder to have the plane to fly level, but then I won't be flying in a strait line.

So is the what everyone experiences when flying the non US planes?

There is no Luftwaffe aircraft in IL21946 that flies hands off including Ju88 He111 (level stabiliser not included).

Its very strange that most of the US aircraft I fly require no/minimal input to get them level and trimmed, in fact these planes are great for going to grab a beer from the cooler, I wouldn't stand a chance in a Luft aircraft.

Just seem like you say, they are unstable for no reason in comparison.

As to the trim characteristics of different aircraft in real life i couldn't comment. But is is not the case with all aircraft Axis or US... the P39, P63 and F4Us all need trimming with all throttle changes, among others. But yes the 109s and 190s need constant pilot input to keep them trimmed at high power settings and low speeds, that you get used to.

OK. I'm a moron. At some point over the past few days, I turned off torque and gyro. That's why the planes were acting differently, and probably why you all don't see what I was seeing. With it on, the planes fly level hands off. With some input at different speeds.

Wow. I flew a quick mission. Dropped two bombs "on" a carrier (missed,) and flew to my carrier group. You're right, that thing is tricky. I landed just fine. ( About 100 yards short. lol) It just dropped out from under me at 90 MPH.

I'll stick with the 109 and the new Spit XIV.
