JU 37 G Cannons - dorkfish - 19.04.2009
This is not a MOD request, but just wondering why the huge 37 mm cannons on this plane make such a small impact. The MK 108s make ground craters and plumes when they hit water. The BK 3.7 should too.
Not bitching, just curious.
Maybe a way to manually copy the effects of the MK 108 in some file and overwrite the effects of the BK 3.7? I looked around, but don;t understand how all the files work.

Maybe cos the 3.7cm cannons of the stuka shot Armor Percing ammo and the Mk108 shot explosive ammo...

lol. OK. That make sense. But it should make a plume when it impacts water. Again, not bitching, just something I noticed.
For the money, this game is amazing.

yeah i noticed with other airplanes with the BK that when the rounds hit the ground they do explode and leave a crater. i forgot exactly which ones. one of them i remember had every 3rd round or so explode on impact, the rest wouldn't. it is obviously simulating AP & HE rounds...different airplanes in game have just AP, just HE, or both for the BK. The Stuka only has AP. It'd be cool if you could select which one in the loadout screen.

Yeah when you see that video online, it looks like a fountain raises 40 meters into the sky.

In the video online, they are shooting at landing craft. For this job they used HE rounds, not AP like we have in the game.
- Grom29 - 20.04.2009
I think they are AP ( Armour peircing) bullets. They dont explode.

All AP shells above 20mm in the german armed forces have an explosive filling.
Only some shells (ex. AP40, tungsten core, sub caliber ) don't have explosive fillings.
And i bet my shiny metal ass that the shells used in the stuka are normal AP shells.
So what you see in the original videos is correct (logical) and what we have in IL2 is incorrect.

The Stuka G-1/G-2 Kanonenvogel used Tungsten core AP shells for anti-tank purposes, so no HE content there!
In the video HE shells are probably used which were also available to the BK3.7 cannon, we have that kind of ammo in a mixed belting on all other aircraft that are capable of using that cannon ingame (Bf110, Hs129)
Quote:The BK 3,7 was used successfully against tanks, most notably by the Ju 87G, firing a 405 g Hartkernmunition with a tungsten core at 1140 m/s. It was also tried in the air as a weapon against heavy bombers, in Bf 110s. The conventional APHE (680 g) and HE (640 g) munition was used. It was not successful in this role.

You're repeating what i've said. All normal AP shells have explosive filling above 20mm.
And thats Navy, Air Force and Army.
I see you quoted wiki, note that normal 37mm AP shell is more than enough to penatrate top armour plates for the majority of allied tanks.
And, BK 3.7 was a modified 3.7cm pak 35/36.
Used 3.7cm Pzgr (normal AP) @ 685 grams and 3.7cm Pzgr40 (Tungsten core AP, sub caliber) @ 368 grams.
34 vs 64 mm @ 100m of 30

To which I said that Stukas used special tungsten core ammo, not regular AP shells, for AT work exclusively.
For softer, less valuable targets such as these landing crafts ordinary APHE or HE shells were used instead as the tungsten shells would be a waste as they are/were quite expensive (tungsten being a rare metal)
I'm not quoting from Wiki, but from this site which is probably the most comprehensive source for WWII airborne gun data

If various types of shells were used then lets make a MOD with the two types of shells for the Stuka , AP and HE. This should end the discussion lol.
