Israeli War of Independence - Guest - 29.04.2009

I think this would be a great idea. Many ex-WWII pilots participated in this war. Would need a new theatre...

If anyone can come up with some usable data on contemporary airfields or maybe something on roads in the region, I might feel cocky enough to try and make a map of the region, or at least give it a good try.

Even better would be if someone would like to work on the map for the finishing touches, say in placing objects that will be embedded in the map. It's like playing with Lego blocks, except it's for adults and I don't really have the patience for that aspect of map making ...

I think this is a good idea in any case, whoever makes a map. There are quite a number of regional aircraft already skinned anyway.

i'm from israel and i will be happy to help you get all the info you need

Keep it simple and I'll see what i can do for a map.

Few rivers on this map is good since rivers are a pain to make anyway ... and I like dry arid landscapes ... they are fun to make.

If you can get info on contemporary borders in 1948 as well ... that would make it easier to do as well.

Something like this for instance in terms of area?

I just realized the Dead Sea and the river Jordan is gonna a bit of new thing for me ... I remember there being some kind of issue with under sea level water ... but I guess it's not really important for flying purposes ...

I've been working on the "MiddleEast" map for about six months now. It's taken a considerable amount of research to document and find the locations of the various airfields in the 1948/49 era. Plus I've been working on all new custom land textures.

With Dvlpers new "Egyptian" objects this should help me greatly in finishing this map. It's 1 to 1 scale. Unfortunately we can't do below sea level so the Jordan rift/Dead Sea will only be at SL.

So, be patient! It's coming!

P.S. I've also done some IDF/AF skins, historical and fantasy, which are available on my website.

Can you do a canyon like the Grand Canyon that came out recently and put water in it?

They really had all kinds of planes, USA ones, UK ones, Germany ones...

- YOAVABA - 30.04.2009

we bought whatever we could get our hands on but not everyone was happy to sell
five veaufighters were bought from the uk but in order to get them to sell it they told them it was for a war movie and they ware smugeld here. most plane were second hand like spitfires from the chech republic
and dont forget that before israel declerd indipendece it was under the control of the british empire so after they left a lot of spare parts were left behind.
but the first fighter the israeli air force had was the avia s-199 that's a version of a me109.
and four of them were assembeld 20 may 1948 piloted by two isrealis and two volentires and went on a ground attack mission on egyptien armor.

No use duplicating efforts, especially since this map is already so far along and six months in the works. I'll be eagerly awaiting the release.

Apparently a rather handsome reward was offered for any RAF pilot who would simulate an engine failure and belly-land on the beaches without damaging their aircraft beyond repair, though it seems no pilots accepted the offer... in my Spitfire book it has an account by one of the pilots stationed at Ramat David just before they packed up, they were attacked by Egyptian Spits (Mk.IXs) as the local Arabs and the Israelis alike were under the impression that the aircraft would simply be left for the other side. I think the exact reason was a navigational error, but nonetheless it's an interesting story...
