[WIP] New Map - Gran Chaco Map - agracier - 17.05.2009

Finally finished a map that can used in game. This is a map of the Gran Chaco region in present-day Paraguay, where in the 1930's, Paraguay and Bolivia fought for control over this region. The map is mostly of flat plains and wide open spaces, along with some outreaches of the Andes in the west.

Present-day borders are given on the map, along with 1930's contemporary village and city names, some of which have changed.

Historical research and much good advice and testing was given by Cracken, who by the way, has a campaign for this map in the makes, reflecting mainly historical battles and engagements. Skins for Bolivian and Paraguayan aircraft will also be available with this campaign.

Quelty gave invaluable advice on placing of textures in the load.ini, an affair that might otherwise have become complicated for installing.

Please remember this is my first map. There will be many shortcomings. For some reason, probably due to not having rivers at sea level, there are no bridges in this map. But no fear, as in this part of the world, rivers were probably more often forded in shallows, than otherwise. This works in the map as well. Vehicles can ford rivers at road/river junctions.

Object placing is somewhat sparse in this map. The Chaco was a largely un-inhabited region by modern or even contemporary standards. In later versions this might be rectified by doing more work on towns and villages.

Airfields are correctly placed, except for one fictitious airfield for Brazil and Argentina apiece. All airfields are largely rudimentary airfields, once again reflecting the situation in the 1930's.

Download instructions are included in the rar file, as well as the 'add to load.ini' line.

Looking good, mate!
i've actually been busy earlier today fixing up some coastline errors on some of your other maps - think it was Morocco , Red Sea, one of those - some of those maps are pretty awesome, i must say! Big Grin
On another note, check PMs - i need a bit of advice...

Brilliant Agracier; i appreciate your research; this is a not very known battle, even for people around this region.

I will check it out!

Thanks a lot.

Regards;

Chima.

That's a nice compliment, but I wouldn't waste any more time on those tryout maps. They were just to see how things worked, how to get a map set up for further work. I was so happy to even be able to fly around in them ...

I know there were a lot of errors in those first startups. Mostly it had to do with using different map pixel sizes ...

Anyway, with more experience on maps behind my belt, I've in the meantime done some more startup maps, of Morocco too. And this one is far better in all respects. I can send it if you wish, but I still need to assign the terrain textures first.

You have no idea how wonderful it is to be able to make your own map. The world has become my playground ... ha ha. From Tierra del Fuego to the Aleutians and over the Nile delta, the wilds of central Asia, the Caucausus, the Soviet Far East, the jungles of Mozambique and the barren Hejaz ... all have become accessible. And many have the most beautiful landscapes I've yet seen - Tierra del Fuega and Mozambique take the prize so far.

The only real work is placing objects ... I wish I had a clue on how to work with the actors.static tool, but so far all I know how to do is make a template, copy/paste and fiddle around a bit ...

Works for small maps or sparsely populated ones, but not for large maps.

I'm speechless!
I have no time to test all the new maps and textures. I feel like kid in a candystore!!

This is still the first map that is actually finished so that it can used for game play. All the others I've done were just tryouts, startup maps to see how the terrain looked and to get a feel for their look and atmosphere.

The real work comes with trying to finish them adequately ... that's a whole different game by golly.

I couldn't have finished this map without help from Cracken and Quelty. So thanks to them as well.

Map looks stunning. I checked the Wiki entry for the Chaco out of curiosity a couple of weeks ago and your map looks like the photos in the article!

Congratulations for a job well done!

Hi, looks great nice to see some of the less trod paths of aviation hsitory coverd in the mod. In the text there is a mention of a Morocco map. Can this be downloaded even as a Beta, if so where?

Great stuff
Alban

Yeah, I have made 9 Chaco missions for the Bolivian air force already, but for Zimbotho map. I am glad I "will have to" remake them for this great map. (But Zimbotho is a good map - maybe I will make a fictional Vichy campaign for it Smile)

Excellent little map. However, there is one thing you should pay attention to - something many map makers seem to completely ignore but which really bothers me everytime it happens : Repeating Texture Patterns.

One of your 'arid' textures has a little cluster of dark green bushes on it, and it creates a very noticeable pattern on the ground as the texture repeats itself across many square miles, creating lines of identical looking bushes.
This effect can be got rid of by either using other textures to break the pattern in areas where the 'bush' texture is the only one used, or by modifying the 'bush' texture (erasing the bush or spreading out smaller bushes across the .tga)
Many maps suffer from this syndrome - especially asian maps with the horrible 'rice fields' textures - while it could pretty easily be avoided.

Apart from this one issue, it looks like a very fun map to fly in. I just wish there were more mountains as I really like how you made them !

Cheers

Nico

I know about the repeating problem ... I think I know where it cropped up in this map. I'll see if I can fix it up in a future update.

I've tried various ways of breaking up patterns in tiles. For one, I always use any cultivated fields textures in a sparse manner, never in large blocks, but rather noise generated and then fiddled around a bit with manually.

The Chaco map is indeed heavy on plains ... that's how it goes when you stick to a historical scenario. I've found the most fun looking maps are those with mountains, but not too many either.

I must confess to not yet having altered textures very much except for changing con/bright or some color values ... will have to hone my (lamentable) skills in other departments ...

And the mountains - aren't they lovely? I don't make them, it's Microdem really and the uncontrollable forces of nature.

There is an incredibly captivating mountainous area in Mozambique that looks and feels enchanting. The only trouble is, I have no idea what kind of WWII scenarios could have taken place there ...

None, but that doesn't matter. I have a few dozen ideas for ficticious post-colonial transition era 'bush wars' scenarios using WWII aircraft for serious groundpounding in Africa. I can use all the african maps you mapmakers can make Wink

Anyway, looking forward to the next updates on your Chaco map !

Cheers

Agracier thanks for the map! Wondering where you gett all those skins and If some "Paraguayan" skins are available too
