Aleutians Map - Nearing Completion - agracier - 20.05.2009
Here are a few screenshots of a map of the Aleutians that is nearing completion. Another joint venture with Cracken.
Since the distances are so large, we've had to compromise and compress map distances to be able to include Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island as well as show Attu and the others on the outer fringe.
Luckily this map doesn't need many objects in cities or towns, so populating should be done fairly quickly. It is, aside from some tweaking of textures ad a few smaller things, the only job still left.
Below are some panoramic screenshots ...

What is the size of yours?

Great job on the map! My Dad is a fisherman in Alaska so he'll be glad to see this!
Keep up the good work! 8) 8)

In pixels it's 12000 x 5200 ... but in order to reduce open water and flying times, we left out the middle island group between Attu and Unalaska, and put these two far closer together ... and we did the same with the Attu and the Kiska group ... 12000 pixels is already a large map to load.
Reduce the scale and you can get them all in on one map of course, but then the landmass left over is small too ... this is just another way of having American held and Japanese held islands on one and the same map, without it being too huge ... just a little trick with geography in a way.
I think if you kept it all to scale at 50m = 1 pixel, then you could start flying at Attu and watch the extended version of Lord of the Rings before you got to Dutch Harbor ... ha ha

Yeah, but in the islands you left out, there is Adak, which was an important airbase for both the USAAC and the RCAF operating in the area.

Looking good! Keep us appraised of how it's going please.

I like the 2nd shot.

Looks good so far. I've been waiting for this map for some time.
As for compressing the map to a manageable size, no problem. Many of the stock maps are either compressed for composites so this shouldn't be a problem...although leaving out Adak Island.....I guess if it's an issue for me I can make my own dam map right?
There will be a 'Winter' version as well, right? I hope so.
Finally, (because i just couldn't resist)

Kind of a rude question.....

Looking great Agracier, look forward to downloading.
All the best, Pete.

Thanks for the job Agracier! Looking forward to this map!!

The map should be posted in the coming days.
Just a few screenshots to show how things are looking. It was a bit unusual doing a snow landscape, but fun and more to the point, I think it turned out in an acceptable manner.
These are of Dutch harbor and the Attu airfields

Agracier this map rocks!!! Looks beautiful! Now we only need some skins for the planes involved on the campaign. IIRC
P-39
P-40
B-24
A6M
Rufe
Anything I not posted?

I just watched the pics.
I'm looking forward to do some missions with this map.
But I just wanted to ask: is there any way to replace the "white" runway textures by, hmm, PCP ones?
THe white runway texture on the brown ground texture is a bit... strange? No?

Well, I don't know if it's strange or not - lots of things seems strange to me when it comes to gaming, but in any case it doesn't look that nice, and that's a good point.
So now I changed them into dark gray runways - corrugated metal or tarmac or whatever it is supposed to be made of. And it looks better too.
Nice suggestion. Thanks.

Marsden Matting was used extensively in the Aleutians because most of the runways were built on permafrost which was never intended to carry the weight of planes like the B-24.
