Any Caucasus area map? -
CzechTexan - 23.05.2009
Is there a map already or is anyone working on a map of the Caucasus?
I'm referring to the area between Tuapse or Sochi (in the west) to Grozny in the east [land east of the stock Kuban map].

Not aware of any and I usually have my ears cocked to hear any Eastern Front stuff.

Agracier has some starter maps of this region and said anyone can use them. I'm tempted to do it but have some doubts. I might fiddle around with it a lil bit.

That's right ... it's a nice mountainous terrain in parts, varied and interesting. I can get a map of the region done with assigned terrain, roads, place names and airfields (if someone can show me where they should be) ...
But it's always the objects that are a strain on time, a real bottleneck. I don't know know how to use the auto-populating tools. These utilities really ease the time needed on getting a map done, but for the life of me I haven't figured out how they work in practice. A good, detailed tutorial would be a godsend ... a nod and a wink ...
Anyway, up to populating a map, I can get one of this region done should anyone care to take over from there ...
Here is btw a starting map of a Caucasus area - no textures, no roads - just a simple landscape. Put one your own working load.ini files into the folder and add a line to your all.ini.

Agracier, I had a look at your map but I can't really tell where the cities are. I can't tell if Grozny is included, is it?
I was thinking it might be better to shift the area more to the east and to the north.
The stock Kuban map already has Tuapse so that part of the map is not needed.
Instead, cut off the map in the west to just include Sochi, and try to get the Maykop oil fields further to the north. More land mass in the north and less Black Sea in the south.
Good areas to include: Sochi, Maykop, Pyatigorsk, Terek River region, Grozny.
During the summer and fall of 1942, the Germans tried to push through the Caucasus mountains. They tried to cut through several valley passes to reach the coast and cut off the Russian army at Novorossyisk and Tuapse. Heavy fighting stopped the Germans but they almost reached Grozny. The Russians had several airfields around Grozny and they also held the port cities on the coast with harbors and airfields.

If you can get the map with textures and rivers, then I could populate it with objects and airfields.
Thanks again for your interest in this map!
Oh, and if you need help in translating the Russian cyrillic names then I can do that.

How about downloading this screencap, and outlining the part on the map you'd like. Between Cyrillic names and Microdem with no border info, it gets confusing where is what on a Microdem dem ...

The area doesn't have to be exact but it would be good to have the area inside the red box. The yellow box will be OK too if you want to make it an easy square.
I decided that Sochi is not necessary as it would include a larger area to populate, etc.
Instead, the area from Grozny to Sukhumi will be good enough.
