New Map in Progress - Dakar 1940 - agracier - 27.05.2009

Here are a few screenshots of a new map that is nearing completion over the next days: Dakar 1940.

It is an out-of-the-way map of a forgotten campaign that took place in September 1940, when British and Free French forces tried to wrest control of the port of Dakar from Vichy French authorities.

The British and Free French used naval forces, which allows for aircraft carrier enthusiasts to do some serious planning and flying. And with Vichy French aircraft in the game, it also gives scope to use some of those colorful skins that Vichy planes sported.

The map itself is relatively simple, not mountainous or even hilly. But it does contain not only scrub desert, but also greener areas to the south. There are few large cities, one only actually, which is Dakar itself. It has a European city and port and an African city as well.

For this and for the other villages and towns spread throughout the landscape, you will need the dlv Egypt objects mod - but it is worth installing as it installs the right atmosphere for this map.

Here are some screenshots.

Excellent idea ! I visited Senegal a few years ago, and that's pretty much how I remember the countryside looked like. We so need a Baobab object Big Grin

A little note though : IIRC, the infamous 'gold and red' Vichy markings came with the late regulations, after the Syria-Lebanon campaign and were only applied during the last few months before Vichy was invaded (yeah, we got invaded twice...) by the Germans after the Torch landings. They were made famous because that's how planes looked in Morocco and Madagscar when the allies attacked there in 1942, bu in 1940, the Vichy markings would only consist of a white longitudinal stripe on the fuselage.

Recent research showed that in some cases, and especially in Africa, the yellow stripes might have been painted white because of paint shortages, but that's knitpicking Big Grin

Cheers

Nico

agracier! You are one busy mapmaker! This is a small map but it looks wonderful! Good job.

I love the Morane in those pics. Also the map layout looks nice.

Agracier, I see with pleasure on those pictures that you used some of my mods... I think about houses from Egypt objects and cultivated woods from WoodPack... no problem, they are made for

May I ask you if the intensive use of those houses (... I see many) has heavy impact on fps ?

I ask because I never tried myself...

The Egypt objects are so lovely, they give just the right touch.

As for the impact on fps - I don't think it is very pronounced, except perhaps over the city of Dakar itself - it contains a European part, a harbor and then the native section. I don't really do much flying at all lately, except for trying out maps, and then it is usually only with 1 or perhaps a flight of 3 planes.

I guess I will have to set up a mission or 2 to try it out.

Over the rest of the countryside though, the impact should be minimal. The villages are relatively small and far and between ...

YES! I was hoping someone was going to have a go at this! Now all we need is a Fulmar, Potez 540 and MB 200. Big Grin

Thanks.

If you want, I plan to release (... amongst other things  ) an update for Egypt/African style houses... with some cool things, and much more light than those ones... so it can be used smoothly on city templates....

... but for now, I'm going from one project to one other every day... I can't focus on single one... and I loose time

I'm sure that would be lovely and very useful. I've got a number of maps lined up - and just like you I hop from one to another as the mood takes me or as it works out best - and quite a few of them will be using your Egyptian houses. They are just the thing for north Africa in general, the Middle East and neighboring areas. And what's great about them is that you can have houses overlapping each other and sticking out of other houses - that just makes it look even more like real villages, where everything is all a jumble and devoid of any kind of planning whatsoever.

This remark made me take a look at the number of maps I have started up, that are in various stages of completion/neglect.

I would have thought a dozen, but when i counted the directories there were 42 - some almost done, some in between, others just started - but 42 in all that are flyable.

Now tell me - shouldn't there be a section here on the forum for Mapaholics Anonymous?

Is this a form of attention disorder? Or is it a kind of multi-tasking capability?... ha ha
