Need your opinion... - Mangas - 01.06.2009
Hello to all.
Unfortunately, my Leadtek 8800GTX is no more... Any ideas what to substitute it with?
I'd be satisfied with anything that's equal or better than that...
I've spent all day but very confused: 8800GTS (512) or 9600 or 9800 or 260/260-2 or what?
All your opinions are appreciated.
Regards,
Mangas.
P.S.: my PU is 500W (but TRUE watts, not chineese  )...

9800 is based on the 8800, virtually identical except a die-shrink and a small %-age more performance. The 260-216 is a step up from the 8800/9800 ones and the 260-216 or "260-2" has more processing units (216) activated than the "old" 260. Can't remember if these are ROPs or TMUs. In IL2 you wouldn't notice much of a performance difference, but more demanding games (Crysis?
) should run a few frames faster. As for power requirements, I haven't looked at them.

Hi,
I recently got a gtx260-216 to replace a 8800gts 320 MB (inferior to your 8800GTX, with only 320MB of memory).
Runs very nicely on an Antec 500W power supply. Does require 2 PCIe power connectors though and is VERY long - 2 inches more than the 8800gts320 - I had to convert my case to get it in!
It runs cooler as well which was surprising.
Big step up in performance from my old card. I read that il-2 was cpu-limited, but noticed huge improvement in fluidity of motion with the new card and IQ took a small step upwards too (182.5 drivers).
Running at 1680x1050 with E8200 Core2 Duo on Perfect with landGeom=3.

I'm as happy as can be with my 9800GT - runs IL2, Crysis, etc fantastic.
And i got it at a great price, too!
500W should be ample for any of the cards mentioned...

Check your system's estimated/approximated power with this
PSU calculator.

As everyone has already told you, your power supply is going to be dictated by what video card you run. If you want to think ahead for BoB:SOW, you need to think in the realm of the GTX 280 or better. I just upgraded to 2 GeForce GTX295's in SLI. Due to the LARGE power requirements of the cards, I had to upgrade to a 1200w power supply to run everything.
If I were you, I'd be looking for a card/PSU combo that will work for the foreseeable future, not just a stop gap to get you back in the air. With the current state of the economy, you can find some pretty good deals out there from local computer dealers that just want to move their stock. I picked up my PSU for $149.00 (Kingwin 1200w). Normally that particular PSU goes for about $289.00.
Btw, my GTX295's are shorter than the 9800 series cards and shorter than the GTX280's I was running. Made getting my raid setup back in much easier.
