Undercarriage-/flaps-down indicators - rossmum - 02.06.2009

After seeing JapanCat's brilliant work on the A6M family, I figured I might as well post something I've been wondering about for a while: the visual undercarriage- and flaps-down indicators on planes like the Hurricane and (especially) the Spitfire. While it's usually fairly clear from the handling of the AC or the instruments whether they're down or not, these were an integral part of all marks of the aforementioned aircraft and fairly visible (especially from the cockpit, for obvious reasons); they also would indicate whether one wheel had locked down or whether neither had, which the simple up/down indicator does not.

Is anyone willing to add these?

Well, if they had them - why not? Were they flip type, or elevator type (up and down vertical movement)?

As a side note, these are built into the Whirlwind as well, its a easy enough modification for the existing a/c if its wanted...

The flap indicators on the Spit were flip-up with the pivot at the rear, not entirely sure on the gear but from the looks of things they were of the elevator type (I can't see any recesses around them, which would likely be present if they flipped). I have a few photos of K5054 after a belly landing showing the (then paired) flap indicators quite clearly, if my scanner was working I'd post them.

In case anyone reading is not sure as to their location, the Spit's flap indicators were on the trailing edge, above the centre of the flap; you can see them ingame on the skin, they're shaped a bit like round-nosed bullets. I'm not sure about their locations on other aircraft, but more than likely they'll be easy to find after a brief study of the wing textures.

Can you make the mirror on the engine nacelle of the P-38s too, so I can check the nosewheel's progress in and out of it's bay???
