Historic belting - Kocur - 08.06.2009

I find AAA policy of not changing any weapons proporties in particular mods, apart from new slot planes, righteous. There can be no mess in area so important from between-players relations point of view.

Then again belting of US .50 hmgs is so wrong historically, it's almost ridiculous. I mean HE projectile? There was no such .50 projectile in US inventory! How can it be then fired by guns in US planes...

So I thought that historic belting and no-mess can be combined. Some of us saw famous and succesful community battle with Oleg for correct belting of MG 151/20, ie. belting that included Minengeschoss projectiles. I think that it would be perfectly ok if there was AAA mod that would make universal change of .50 M2 belting for guns in all planes, along the lines of what Oleg did in some 4.x patch. No mess and correction of important error.

There is an issue of which belting should be used. I belive that all US 1943 and later planes should have 4API-tracer belting. I think it is common knowledge that it was initial improved US belting. Even if later no tracer belting was used, the mixed one was used still. It must be a matter of compromise, but so was the case of Oleg's Minengeschoss inclusion, as historically there were different beltings with those.
US-made planes older than 1943 ones should have different belting but it is still worth changing, just to provide US types of ammo, ie. make it historical. That includes P-39 and P-40 used by Soviets, as they were equipped with US guns and their ammunition, 12,7 mm x 99, was different than Soviet .50 cartridges, 12,7 mm x 107.

Naturally I have in mind using original Oleg's virtual projectiles with their individual properties unchanged. In other words I do not suggest changing their "power". That would not be in conflict with history, as we may assume that Oleg took Soviet ammo relative performance when adjusting game's 12,7 mm API power. It is little known fact that US .50 M8 API projectile was based on Soviet 12,7 mm x 107 B-32 API.

My knowledge on game's internal design, so to speak, is very limited, but I belive that belting is a matter separate from particuar planes FM and DM. So I hope that adding just two corrected beltings, 1939-1942 and 1943-1945, would not be any serious issue, technically speaking.

The issue and possibly the controversy is probably the whole idea, not historically but as a matter of AAA policy. But I really think that such an AAA mod would be simply using again a cure once used by Oleg himself, just that in different case and as such should not be controversial at all. In particular it would not be in conflict with the policy of not changing weapons properties of individual modded planes.
