My First Attempt at Painting an IL2 Skin - RAF209_Louvert - 14.06.2009

Hello All,

I have been enjoying IL2 now for the last couple of weeks and decided it was time to try my hand at painting some skins for the RAF 209 PBN. I did some research and downloaded several of the PBN packs already available and chose a template by IMME to use as the starting point. I then created the camo pattern, tweaked and reworked roundels, and also added the ID letters, (discovered that the "Bombardier" font is a near-perfect match to what is seen in period photos of these planes). Here are a few full-sized screenshots of the end result:

The last shot is of my personal plane with the "L" call letter and nose art I created for "Beano's Bombers". My intention is to build the full alphabet, (already a third of the way through), and make it available in a zip file to my RAF 209 squad mates, (and anyone else who would like to use them).

BTW, I love being able to paint on a full-sized canvas. It's a far cry from the old RB3D planes. Smile

Cheers!

Lou

- Andy Brandt - 14.06.2009

fantastic skin, made even more so by the fact its your first
looking forward to the download!

- Boris The Spider - 14.06.2009

Very good first effort. My only comment would be that the panel lines are a little too strong IMO. Soften them up a bit and your skin is completely brilliant.

- RDDR - 14.06.2009

Absolutely first rate job mate.
As Boris suggested, tone down your panel lines some, and make your exhaust stains brownish then tone it down using opacity on the layer to do so. I see a bit of purple in the exhaust there on the screenie I'm looking at .I'd get rid of that.
All and all excellent work

Thanks all for the kudos and the constructive feedback, it is much appreciated. I will tweak the items mentioned by Boris and RDDR and get back to you with another screenshot. Once I have this one dialed in I will gladly offer the download to all who would like it.

Cheers!

Very nicely done, that thing is horrible to skin because it warps the skin so much.

Great work!

- RAF209_Louvert - 15.06.2009

Thanks ArcticViper. And you are oh so right Sir, the wrap distortion can be a challenge to correct for. However, I have been exposed to this issue before. In fact, the worst one I ever had to do was the Strutter 1 1/2 in OFF. That one was a devil. Smile

Cheers!

Lou
