How do you make defult skins? - hammond67 - 18.06.2009
Can anyone please tell me how I can make a defult skin for an aircraft. I have Irfan View and Gimp but do not know how to use these programs, so i'll probably need a tutorial.
Thanks in advance.

Go to VPMedia's site and get his skin mod. Then you can change those, if you would still want to.

Damaged? Or "weathered" as in paint worn off the surface?

In this file root...
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\SKINMOD\3do\plane
I have all the aircraft folders, these aircraft folders have summer and/or winter files in them.
In some of these summer or winter files, there are painschemes called "skin1o", "skin1p" and "skin1q". There is also another one called "skin1o.tgb".

OK, let's take plane\A6M2-21(ja)\summer\
You start by renaming "skin1o.
tgb" to "skin1o
_.tg
a" (to avoid conflict with the file already named "skin1o" and to easily identify the file you later need to rename to the .tgb extension) Now you can open it like you would the other TGA files and change it the way you want it to. When you're done, save it (32Bit, no RLE compression).
Resize the 1024x1024 skin to 512x512 and save it as skin1
o.tga (again 32Bit, no RLE). Resize to 128x128 and save as skin1
p.tga. (32Bit, no RLE) Resize to 16x16 and save as skin1
q.tga. (32Bit, no RLE)
Last thing to do is rename skin1o
_.tg
a back to skin1o.tg
b.
If you want to replace the skin with one you like, open that skin (I assume either already a BMP or you're going to make one with a template) and save it as a TGA file and name it skin1o_.tga (32Bit, no RLE). Place the skin1o_.tga into the aircraft directory and do the resizing steps as above and the renaming thing.
Why some skins have damage or see-through spots, I can only guess the creator of that skin wanted the skin to be battle scarred and/or heavily used.

Ok, Im going to explain the best I can so stick with me...
Every Defult I look at has a damage effect done to it, but in the game, this damage isnt seen until the aircraft is damaged.
Its like a layer or something, If I knew how to upload pics I would.
Thanks for the tutorial anyway 8)

Yes, there is a seperate "skin" that has the rips, tears, bullet holes and such. They are called damage1o.tga damage2o.tga damage1p.tga and damage2p.tga. They are in the SFS files, stored in the same location as the skins, so in \3DO\Plane\[aircraft name].
If an area on the aircraft is hit, part of this "skin" becomes active and shows damage or becomes a hole.
Ive got it!!! - hammond67 - 19.06.2009
I know how to edit these now, and I know what was wrong.
Irfan view shows all layers, but gimp shows the layer I want.
Irfan view was showing the damage layer, but in gimp, this layer is gone.
well, im off to go edit some schemes, thanks again for the tutorial
