Now seriously , you gonna lovet it !!
I switched about two years ago from Pentium P4 and ATI X1300 PCI bus only !!
to a rocket blast Intel Quad and Nvidia 8800GT and it was like a brand new simulator
for me all over again .
Some decent gaming puter machine is a must especially since there is pile up of
graphics and processor more demanding wonderful mods !!!
Not much helping you with selecting ingredients for cooking a very good machine but
I just wanted to say it
Good luck with upcoming new rig !!!!

Hi HansHansen,
I've built my new rig a few weeks ago and it's very similar to yours:
QuadCore AMD Phenom X4 Black Edition 9950, 2600 MHz
Asus M3A78-EM
2x 2GB Kingston HyperX DIMM 4 GB DDR2-1066
Gainward GTX275 896 MB
Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card PCI
Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 1TB
Windows XP Prof. 64bit
All items I've ordered at Alternate and I'm very satisfied. Alternate isn't the cheapest, but their service and delivery period are great.

thanks for your help so far, i looked in newegg.com for those components, its very cheap (750gb HD 46
- GeneralPsycho - 18.06.2009
I would suggest going like this
Intel Core I7 920 2.66GHZ (easily can be overclocked to 3.0GHZ with a stock cooler)
MSI X58 Pro Mother board
GTX 275
750gb
what would be your total budget?
- Pirate - 18.06.2009
Hey psycho - I'm looking at building a similar spec PC to what you have suggested, I've read that you can clock the hell out of the 920 - way past even the fastest I7s on the market, and a huge amount cheaper too. But I'm looking at a 285, and trying my hardest to not buy the 295... its SO expensive! all told for a complete build from scratch - case, PSU, RAM, MB, Processor, GPU, HDDs etc. its going to be about
- HansHansen - 18.06.2009
i have 650-750
- GeneralPsycho - 18.06.2009
That is a great build Hans! Though you will lack the upgraidability because the LGA775 is phasing out
Pirate, I suggest going for GTX275 because there is like 4fps difference in games with GTX285, plus its a lot cheaper too, so you could maybe get a nice mother board, or nicer cooler for the CPU
If someone wants to build an AMD rig with first generation Phenom, you can face some serious problems, such as lack of real support for 64 bit OS/applications.
- Pirate - 18.06.2009
Well, thats what I'm looking at at the moment. I'm sure I can find some of the components cheaper elsewhere, this was just to give me an idea of the price.
Edit: you might well be right about the 275 the performance is very similar and the price gap is significant. I agree about going with the I7s, the 920 is fantastic and significantly cheaper than the rest of the range.... time to jump on the I7 train I think....
- HansHansen - 18.06.2009
hey generalpsycho you were right, the i7 920 isnt that expensive i thought , 252
- Junkers - 18.06.2009
Hi Hans.
Just remember, if you go for the i7, you will need a motherboard with an LGA 1366 socket for the CPU. And don't overlook the PSU (Power Supply Unit), you will need not only high wattage, but also high quality. These power supplies are have gotten good reviews:
http://www.be-quiet.net/be-quiet.net/index.php?websiteLang=en (They are a German brand). One more thing, if you order from outside Europe, you will probably have to pay customs taxes. You should check that out first because the prices in the UK aren't even that bad at the moment. For example:

- GeneralPsycho - 18.06.2009
Pirate, that looks like a very solid build
but as for GTX285 and GTX275, the difference is very minimal, not enough to justify of 70-100$ increase
I would also worry about your PSU, its 700watts, so you might have a hard time SLI'ing your rig in the future
What you can do-- Get GTX 275 and get a little more powerful PSU, so in the future, GTX275 will be cheap and you can get another card for SLI no problem(BOB SOW will support SLI or CrossfireX)
- HansHansen - 19.06.2009
thanks guys
you helped me a lot!!
i think i fell in love with the i7
the only thing is that my total computer got a bit expensive (900
- GeneralPsycho - 19.06.2009
Well, there should a huge price reduction for i7's becuase some new processors are going to come out such as i5's
other than that, nvidia is planning to reduce prices on GTX275 in the following month
so unless you are willing to wait just a month, you can save some money
Also, try to reuse the DVD/CD player from your old computer and use it in the new one( 18 euros savings  )
If the case that you have ordered doesn't have as many fans as you like, you can still reuse some old fans (10?? euros savings  )
