Hints for drawing directly on to tiles? - mandrill7 - 20.06.2009

I want to mod the Rom lowlands 1 tile - the green tile with the treelines - to look like a patch of "drained" swampland. If you check maps of Belarus, much of the land is cut with drainage ditches as the land is marsh in its natural state.

I have no problem taking some of the trees off the tile. However, my attempts to draw ditches looks awful. Exactly like some idiot drew fake-looking, little brown lines all over an otherwise nice tile.

Any art school types out there who can give me some hints???

Maybe draw them in a separate layer and use glow and/or blur to give them that sloping look? You could then also play around with the merge of the layers, as either overlay, multiply, lighten or darken and the transparency slider for the strength of the effect?
