Win 7 issues.....somebody shoot me!!! - Guest - 22.06.2009

Hi gents
So, i spent the entire weekend reinstalling IL2 and getting it to work as it once did. I'm running a dual-boot system, with XP Pro and Win 7 RC 32-bit. Win 7 was working fantastically until 2 days ago, when i started getting system freeze-ups at any given time, whether i was using it or not. No errors, nothing, just a total freeze up.
This is only happening on the Win 7 OS, Xp is still humming along nicely, as i'm used to..
I've tried reinstalling Win 7 - still gets the freezeups; Formatted the HD and reinstalled Win 7....whille setting up internet, having a look at fly_zo's post about the new 186 drivers, and thought i'd give them a try....just as that page was loading...you guessed it, system freeze-up. This knid of system freezing, in my experience, is generally because of a windows registry fault, but in this case, I just don't get it. It's a newly-formatted drive, fresh Win 7, NOTHING else installed, and crash.....
if there was a recognised error, i'd have something to work with, but its just a freeze-up, with no error messages. I've tried every option available to me, sytem restore, memory tests, etc.....nothing has yielded any results.
I have 4GB RAM onboard...it used to be 2GB, but I upgraded to 4 last week. I thought maybe the new RAM might be the issue, but so far haven't been able to pinpoint it....besides, the XP OS is quite happy, and if it was faulty RAm, surely it would affect XP as well?
Anyway, I'm now uninstalling Win 7, which is a pity, because it looks like a decent OS, but i can't work with something that freezes up at random like this. The freezeups generally occur within the 1st half-hour of operating, but sometimes it will go more than 12 hours, with me doing all kinds of work, before suddenly freezing. Most times, however, it just freezes up by itself without me runining any apps.
I don't expect anyone to have answers ready, as Win 7 is basically still beta, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.
Cheers 8)

PS: this is the next in a long line of PC/IL2 woes that have been plaguing me for months now, some of you will know. Its at times like this when i don't know whether to laugh or to cry, but i'm going to opt for laughter...the laughter of someone who is about to become a homicidal maniac... Smile  Big Grin Tongue

Afaik, problem started after you upgraded to 4GB.Was is it ok before an upgrade? What type of memory? Are they same size & speed?

Hi bigbossmalone Big Grin

Welcome back and happy flying as soon as you get things sort out !! Tongue
I am sure more suggestions are coming about possible culprit and fix .

Stay the course !

... do check advanced power options on Win7 ( control panel ... power options ...)

make sure you set options for CPU (min 100% ; max 100% ) , USB (no selective ...) and PCIex to full ( no saving ...) in plan options

You said win 7 32bit? Isn’t it 64bit?

I'm also running Win764bit and have no problems what so ever. It runs all my simulators up to 35fps better!

It might be the 4GiG upgrade that you did.

I must say, the last time I used such a stable OS, was NT-Server-4.

Hope you come right though

It does sound like something related to the ram. You may need to increase the voltage for the ram - check the required voltages for the ram and match that in the bios, its usually set to 'auto' which might not be providing enough. Obviously be careful when playing around with voltages...

I use HyperOS which allows me to run multiple operating systems. I have one partition for Win 7 64 bit, and so far, RC1 (which is Build 7100) has been flawless. I find myself using it more than any of the Vista 64 partitions that I have.

Even with less than 4GB of memory you really should need to install the 64 bit version. The only good reason for installing the 32 bit version would be if you are installing on something like a Netbook, or a really old sysyem that doesn't have a 64 bit processor.

It's also quite possibly related to your video card, as nVidia seems to be 'behind the curve' with their drivers for Win 7, just as thay were with Vista.

I know Vista 64 had an issue when you installed it into a PC with 4GB, and had to take 2GB out to install it, then add an MS patch, before placing the 2Gb back in.

Have you tried running the system with just 2GB installed (the original) and also making sure that it is all correctly seated. I have done this before as-well, making the assumption that the memory was correctly seated, when in fact it was just slightly raised and causing erratic errors.

I also had random errors, and trust me, I feel your pain, when I had a Soundblaster card installed, but when I had moved a couple of cables, the Soundblaster had just lifted fractionally out of the PCI slot. I went through the same formatting re-install regime absolutely positive it was a hardware fault, but not being able to track it down.

All I can say is take everything out apart from the bare minimum ie Hard drive, 1 Graphics Card, no sound card (unless onboard) and 1 stick of memory.

Do a clean install and see what happens. Once stable, add one piece at a time....good luck!

Cheers, MP.

seems to me that it might be RAM-related, after all. if i look in my computer properties, it shows memory as: 4GB (3GB useable)
i've never seen it displayed like that, previously it just displayed as 4GB???
another thought, though...its a 2GB stick of memory, and they don't break in halves....if it was faulty, it would surely only display 2GB memory?
anyways, i'll try removing the new stick, and see how she runs like that....
thanks for support, chaps... 8)

@ eddie_brunette:

I'm in the process of setting up my Win7 64bit . . .

Drivers are working fine etc., but the only part of Il2 I was able to install is the basic Il2 FB.
Trying to add the Ace expansion or even the Mod-version is failing.

Win7 isn't even accepting the setup for Ace expansion . . . ?

Any Ideas?

Sometimes you can get some clues from Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer.

Application and System are the modules to check for errors that might precede a lock up

Freezes are usually hardware issues but in the absence of either a BSOD or a Reboot it might be worth a look

That means you are running 4GB on a 32Bit OS. WindowsX32Bit, Vista32Bit and Windows7 32Bit all have an addressable memory limit. You've put 4GB of memory in the system, but a 32Bit OS is only able to create addresses for around 3.5GB of it. So you've added a graphics card that requires it's share of addresses and takes what it needs. If you have 512MB on the card, you have 3GB of memory left for your other resources, like games and the like..

Downside to 32Bit: Memory... Downside to 64Bit: Drivers for older HW... No clue how that "XP in Windows7" option works with older HW. I suspect it makes software run in a virtual XP, but uses Win7 for the hardware and therefore it's drivers.

FWIW I have a brand new Win 7 systen and was getting continous BSOD,Windows was reporting different memory quantities at random- found 3 problems Prob #1- 1 bad stick of RAM (pull all sticks out and put them back in one at a time to test in slot 1 with memtest) My dimm that was in slot 5 had 4000 errors on the 4th pass. RMA done and new RAM OTW
ditched the bad dimm and put the good ones back in until I get my replacement RAM. Also I reformatted the drive and reloaded everything, so many crashes and corrupt files
problem #2 I had installed NIS 2009. Found out it was incompatible with Win 7 x64 installed nis 2010 (Norton gave me a free upgrade) this solved the BSOD but was still getting websites that wouldn't load like UBIsoft website. I uninstalled Adobe Flash and reinstalled Adobe Flash 10 and it solved that problem. (after another reformat and reload)
Now everything is beautiful except I believe I have some video setting issues that causes the game to randomly stutter. And I wish I could get Hyperlobby to install-sigh
