How much does skin size matter to fps? - letku - 06.07.2009

Good night everybody!

As i've got 10.8gb's worth of skins it would be nice to know what kind of difference it could make if i made all the plane skins to 512x512 instead of the default 1024x1024 skin size that most seem to be?

Would the loading times get shorter and maybe i could get better fps as my pc is having some trouble with U.I on perfect settings?

I looked at the first plane A5M4 in skin folder and converted one skin from 1024 to 512.
This reduced the file size from 1mb to 257kb.This could reduce my skin folder size to just under 3gb's maybe.
Could the downgraded skins create any new possible problems?

As i fly always in cockpit i don't need to use the external view to admire those sharp skins i can live with downgraded skins if it helps the framerate problem and gives shorter loading times.

Or am i totally lost with this idea???

The original IL-2 Sturmovik was 512x512 so there won't be any problems except more pixelated skins.

Ok, good to know!
I think i've managed to downsize the test skin quite good as i can't see much of a difference with 512 to 1024. The bigger one looks just a little bit softer then the 512 skin.

Just another question, what does the void skin do??? Is it just the base template for skin painters?
I tried to resize it also but the skin doesn't work ingame, it gets big black spots to the plane when using the redused void skin.

Rather than resizing all of your skins, just set TexLarge=0 in Conf.ini. That will reduce the detail shown on all planes (and only on the planes). If your FPS is limited by texture sizes then you'll see an FPS boost (I did) and the planes will still look pretty good.

Allready using TexLarge=0

Also i hope to save some hd-space now that i've bought a couple of addon discs cheap for il2 that i didn't allready own! Big Grin

Ok, managed to resize all skins and the results are:

Hd space for skins now 3.65gb , got me addons installed!
Bad thing was that they installed also new big skins that i need to go through again. Big Grin

Game startup loading time = No change, long as hell, still 1min 30sec Cry

Fmb loading time = Works a little bit smoother :-?

Mission loading time = It's faster in bigger missions that use a lot of different skins Smile

Fps speed = Well i seemed to gain about 10fps more for minimum and average gained also some 8 frames more, no change for max still 68fps on that and these are on missions with other then default skins on planes.

No change in missions with default skins. Cry
