Gimp skinning - Abel6669 - 08.07.2009
hi there. i bought this Il-2 a while back, and i gotta say, its a great game,....but since i still cant land the bloddy things i thought i would give skinning ago. Now im a cheapskate and cant afford Photoshop, so i use the gimp, and i was just wondering if i needed a specific palette for the skins as everytime i try to do anything it comes out a brown colour....or a hell of a lot darker than i wanted..if anyone could help that would be great.
Note: this is my first visit to this site, so apologies if this is the wrong place to post this question

Simmers Paintshop is your friend. Go to the site navigation section on the upper lef6t.. look for Gimp. Also look in the IL2 section.

While you're at simmerspaintshop - go to utilities downloads and get BRIGHTER. It's a free image format converter and will convert the skins you make into 8 bit BMP required for IL2 and they'll look better than most converters can make them.
Export skin from Gimp as 24 bit BMP, start BRIGHTER, find exported file, choose where you want skin to go and click on GO....you're done! (keep file names simple when exporting from Gimp, some characters seem to prevent Brighter from working, you can always change the name later). Brilliant program and it's free

www.simmerspaintshop.com and
www.flying-legends.net are awesome sites to download skin templates, they're well worth registering with. Templates are a great way to learn where everything goes and how to use layers effectively as well as you can makes some pretty cool skins in no time. Don't forget - if you use someone's template don't erase their credits from it, they put in all the hard work, if you want to put your name on it for the work you've done squeeze it in somewhere else aye  Good luck
