Well, first think what you want to mod? Plane, map, textures, effects...
- genral01 - 11.07.2009
planes mostly ive got all kinds of ideas just not sure how to get them on the screen so to speak lol

What planes?
- genral01 - 11.07.2009
well the P-40 is probably my fav. so i guess id start there and then try my hand at making completely new aircraft

if you want to model planes, or rebuild them into corrected shapes, you will need 3dsmax, or another program, and 3dsmax costs 3000 dollar if I'm not wrong

Or you can use Gmax for 3d modeling and use the buggy buggy exporter.
Here you can download gmax for free:
http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax
And here is the exporter:

And the converter:

You need also the SFS extractor

Thats are the basic free tools for start modding.

Hey, but what is better, 3dsmax or Gmax?

Hi All. There are a few things I'd like to see done in IL2, and wouldn't mind giving it a shot. Some of the stuff is a few tweaks to some msh's, and some is just some java simplification in the GUI. Not to sound too needy here, but is there a basic out line of activity for the modelling part? I can get farther faster with at least an outline. I think have the appropriate tools, so as an example project, I'd like to make the wheels of my favorite bird more "round" i.e. a few more polys. So I would do what in general terms? My guess is below (though I only see mats for wheels, so not sure if this will work for that anyway... thought I was looking for a msh).
Guessing the steps:
Fish around the with the SFS extractor to find the object I want?
Convert to 3DSMAX with MSHConverter?
Edit with 3DS Max?
Export with Buggy-buggy exporter?
Repack the SFS with?
Package my mod by doing ?
Anyway, not trying to be a pain, but I'd be happy to dive in a bit with a little starter info (I'm not familar with these tools, but have some modeling experience with Autodesk Inventor and am a former professional programmer - but not in Java).
TIA.

I think that you dont need to make it SFS again

You'll need to check if your meshes end up where they belong, so you'll need to check in game and correct the positions in the hier.him. If you check other mods, they follow a certain structure... well, they should anyway.
