Pre-WWII Fighters Guns ineffective or almost? - mavyalex - 25.07.2009

Hello,

I can't seem to shoot or even damage other planes with pre-WWII fighters like MS-306..Their guns are really weak and even when I strafe bombers for long like TBM-33 almost nothing happens...

Would it be possible to add more damage or is it that they were really weak in terms of firepower?

I'm afraid it's firepower. MG's fire small lumps of lead, whilst cannons fire larger lumps of lead with explosive tips. I guess you could figure out why cannons are more effective. This is why conventional wisdom at the start of WW2 suggested that a pilot should get as close as possible before firing. Hitting the aeroplane might not help you. You need to hit the pilot or his engine, perhaps his fuel tanks, or something equally vulnerable.

Galland used to say "You should smell your enemy" - meaning the burned castor oil from a WW1 engine of the plane in front of you.

Short answer, NO as modifying Weapon Models, Damage models etc is prohibited on this site. Any further discussion of the subject will result in the thread's removal...

However, you're welcome to discuss tactics for improving early aircrafts' effectiveness -- i'd suggest ensuring that you always attack at relatively close range and make sure that you attack at where your weapons converge. I have mine set for 200m.
