Seaplanes and Flying Boats Golden Age for IL2... - Guest - 05.08.2009
~S~
For sure, everyone knows about the japanese anime "Porco Rosso". A cool scenario (Adriatic Sea), cool 1920 - 1930 seaplanes, great dogfights...
Recreating this for IL-2, for sure can give some Copyright-related problems...
The idea is to make something similar, but avoiding those problems.
The Aegean and Joniean Sea, (Greece) offers a wonderful scenario, with lot of islands and reefes..
To bring this project to life, we need the collaboration of a Map-maker, and one or more (better more) 3d Modellers.
The Map we have in mind will need to have Greece, Crete, the West coast of Turkey and going down to comprise the coasts of Lybia and Egypt.
We are looking to have some seaplanes of the correct time period, if possible:
Savoia S.12 (1920) - modified as a fighter
Macchi M.7 (1921) - modified as a fighter
Savoia S.51 (1922) - modified as a fighter
Curtiss R3C-2 Racer (1925) - Modified as a fighter
Macchi M.33 (1925) - Modified as a fighter
Macchi MC.52 (1927) - modified as a fighter
Macchi MC.72 (1931) - modified as a fighter
Supermarine S.5 (1927) - modified as a Fighter
Supermarine S.6B (1929) - Modified as a Fighter
Cant Z.501 gabbiano (1934)
We are also looking for seaplane versions (fictional) of the I-153 and I-153P, the Fiat Cr.42 and the Gloster Gladiator.
Please, interested map-Makers and 3d Modellers make a step forward.
Full credit will be given to all who will collaborate.
Thank you in advance.

Rather than going down the fictional path why not focus on WWI in the northern Adriatic. During WWI small seaplanes were involved in numerous aerial combats and were considered to be effective fighters since the lack of an undercarriage greatly reduced drag.
The beginnings of a map exists already if you look at the Canvas Knights development section.

Naval Aviation
In support of these varied surface craft, Italy developed an extraordinary range of water-based, high-performance fighters, bombers, and reconnaissance airplanes. Along the Adriatic, Austria-Hungary and Italy faced each other across 75-100 miles of water along a front stretching 400-500 miles. Aircraft could attack almost any point along the enemy coast, provided that airbases could be found close to the water. This was frequently a problem for landplanes, however, particularly in Italy. To the south of Venice, the malarial swamps, mudflats, dunes, and drainage canals of the Maremma provided few suitable fields reasonably close to the coast. Much of the land further west was, in any case, rice paddy, subject to periodic inundations by the Po and its tributaries. This same area was, however, amply supplied with small anchorages, sheltered canals, and fishing ports that could support marine aircraft.
FBA Type C
Italian industrial capacity was still modest when war commenced. Italy could not supply sufficient numbers of indigenous warplanes. So Italy relied heavily on imported and license-built foreign types. Obtaining adequate numbers of coastal patrol and convoy escort aircraft posed a particular problem given Italy's long coastline. Accordingly, the Regia Marina imported large numbers of French FBA flying boats. These were somewhat small for use in the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay, so they were not used extensively by the French and British, who preferred longer legged Curtiss, Felixstowe, and Tellier boats. Over the short ranges typical of the Adriatic, FBAs were entirely satisfactory, however. FBAs were used extensively for antisubmarine patrol, convoy escort, and general, maritime reconnaissance.
The Lohner L
The first successful indigenous type, the Macchi Type L general-purpose flying boat, was a direct copy of a captured Lohner Type L, made at the express request of the Italian authorities. Some batches of the aircraft introduced a semi-enclosed cabin for the crew or a different, rounded fin and rudder, but all were essentially similar to their Austrian originals. An Isotta-Fraschini V4B (shown below) substituted for the Austro-Daimler of the captured machine. Bombs, depth charges, and 6.5-mm Revelli machineguns were the usual armament. But many carried a 25-mm, quick-firing Revelli cannon instead, often supplemented by a twin-barreled, 9-mm Vilar-Perosa submachinegun.
The Macchi L
By combining its experience reverse engineering the Lohner with that gained from license manufacturer of Nieuport scouts, Macchi went on to produce the most successful flying boat fighter of all time, the Macchi M.5. This combined the L

Supermarine S5 & S6B? Hardly suitable for converting to use as fighters, and I notice no-one even thought of doing that back then. Racing aeroplanes are designed to go fast, not to serve military purposes. The Germans learned that lesson with the Me209-I.

Wow I love both scenarios.
I didn't know about that aspect of WW 1 air warfare - very intriquing.

You could also use Zo's Croatia map...

Dunno about this idea, but i'd love to see a felixstowe flying boat!

Hi, not so sure about the ealrier planes sugested, but the flying boats for the up and coming Canvas Knights mod would be great. I read that apart from the above, the Italians operated flying boats in the Alps flying of lakes there. It would be nice to see some of these fine aircraft modded inot the game at some point.

CO_King: I think that you seriously underestimate the skills and time required to develop just one new aircraft, much less a whole fistful of them. Realistically, your request isn't going to happen unless you and your squaddies make it happen. Anyone capable of developing mods for the game is doing something else.
Asheshouse: Just a wild guess on my part, since I'm not part of any development team, but given the amount of love and effort going into CK, we'll see those nifty WWI seaplanes some day. Not for a year or more, given historical rates of development for new planes, but eventually. (Unless SoW comes out first and drains away fan interest, but I'm not holding my breath.)
Moderators: While "I wanna" posts are fairly harmless, they're also repititious, screw up search results, and clutter the Mods discussion forum. Would it be possible to have a dedicated Mod Request thread? Not that it would help much, but I'd also love to see a Sticky Thread entitled "Before you request a mod" which explains the limitations of the IL2 game engine, the difficulty of the mod development process, and why it's not appropriate to ask for X-wings, modern jets or orbital, nuclear-powered Luftwaffe 1946 fantasy planes. If you'd like I can write such a FAQ, since writing is one of my few useful skills.

Of course, some Flying Boats from the WW1 period that are under development for the Canvas Knights Project can be included, I have nothing against that.
If everyone collaborate a bit, let say, every modeller working, during the "spare time" on one of the planes listed in my first post, for sure this will not take away a lot of time devoted to their main projects. I know that developing a 3d model and tweaking and refine it is not a child's play, for sure.
But I personally have not such advanced skills as 3d modelling or Map making.... Only some ideas and a lot of enthusiasm...
Cheers

Probably but:
http://www.msacomputer.com/FlyingBoats- ... story.html
http://vintage-aviation.hp.infoseek.co. ... lanes.html
A dual between these two would be cool:
Shavrov 2 fighter variant?
Potez 453 (fighter variant of the even neater Potez 452)
