[Download] 332nd FG Tuskegee Airmen Pack 1 - highlander_262 - 20.08.2009
Hi everyone
First pack in a series as a tribute to the 332nd FG Tuskegee Airmen, a group of black airmen originally formed as an experiment to prove that black men could not handle the technology of a modern aircraft of the time but who ultimately overcame racism and segragation to become one of the elite units of WW2. They may not have been the highest scoring group but their claim to fame was, when they escorted a bomber formation, they never lost a single bomber to enemy air action. In fact it is reported that when the enemy saw the red tails of this group they would turn away and not even engage.
This pack represents the first unit formed , the 99th FS who were equipped with old , war-weary P-40L's.
P-40L-15 42-10855 flown by 1Lt Robert W Diez, 99th FS while based at Madna, Italy, January 1944.
P-40L-5 42-10448 A TRAIN II of 1Lt Charles Dryden, 99th FS based at Fardjouna, Tunisia, June 1944
P-40L-15 42-10888 ACE OF PEARLS flown by 2Lt Herman 'Ace' Lawson, 99th FS, Madna, Italy, December 1943
P-40L-15 42-10461 JOSEPHINE of 1Lt Charles Bailey, 99th FS, Madna, Italy, January 1944

The 99th FS were first issued in May 1943 with hand me down P-40L's. As the other Squadrons were formed ( 100th, 301st, 302nd) worn out P-39's and P-47 Razorbacks were also issued. It wasn't until 1944 that P-51B/C's were issued and these were still war weary cast off's from other squadrons. They didn't receive the P-51D until late 1944, first date I can find being October 1944.
