Woohoo! Satellitedata update: Asterdem works finally - kapteeni - 23.08.2009
I just joined Finnish Virtualpilots and there is 1 guy whos making map of Karelia ( missing airfields in finnish side etc.) and i asked where he did get satellitedata. And he gave me this link:
http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/Cove ... s_org3.htm
Those violet parts of maps are downloadable!!
The format is .hgt and it can be opened with 3dem at least!
Right after i'm finished with Andalucia, i will start to make Northern Finland/Norway
There is this astrogem thing too, but it seems that i can't DL anything from there
Agracier! Where are u now? lol!
Hello - RAF_Wolf - 23.08.2009
Ive use this data for maps i have created in the mast for other flight sim "Condor Flight Sim"
Just so you know it blends good with Nasa data aswell so very few holes to fix in 3dem.
not sure if this link below will open for you you might have to register to view but its a comparison of nasa data fixed patches in 3dem with a google earth picture of same area, a photo taken same place and the map made using your link above with no fix in 3dem
http://forum.condorsoaring.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9434
Worth the time to register as it will open your eyes to realistic map creations, the example i show in the post is not the finished textures just a throw over "make do" to see the results the end result map K2 karakorum map never got released
but if you use the data link you posted your map terrian will be at the quality not seen in IL-2 , with proper mountains , be warned the finnish area does have issues in data
i made a map of the complete ICELAND island and had to edit the hgt map to correct the sea-levels , as the satilite saw the ICE as water on the coast and i think you might see issues on finnish coastal , but if you know how to convert hgt files to trn files then it can be corrected , but hardwork editing.
Best of Luck
Nice to see map makers looking at improving the quality to the top level possible.
Best Regards

Hi and thanks for the links.
Mr Agracier is working his A** off trying to figure the 3dem secrets at the moment. It works at least. But as you wrote, there is problems with it. Fingers crossed...

Any chance of seeing more Finnish maps because of this, kapteeni?
They're my favorite maps.

I will defenedly do all the missing Finnish maps, if somebody else will not.
Because of this missing satellitedata, it is really PITA! But i'll try my best!
This 3dem stuff looked promising, but it seems that there is lots of missing parts (caps) between areas.

hello kapteeni
I dont know my way round this website that well ,and slightly amazed i refound this post lol
i dont know the rules of thumb of mapmaking for this IL-2 sim so ....
Can you use a TRN file which is a Nasa data file , hgt file coverted in 3dem to a
BIN.file , THEN a converted to a RAW.file by a DOS cmd copy line , THEN the RAW.file is coverted to TRN.file via a program convertor.
i ask because a TRN file you can EDIT the Height values using a CST editor , its manual and total pain in the rear but you can edit 10m x 10m squares on all of the map , basically it breaks the hgt file into 4 value heights for each corner of a 10m square , if you riase the value of one full 10m square UP by extra 30m , then all squares conected with the sides of this raised square are effected only on 2 or 1 corners of these squares depending on there location to the raised square , i notice your IL2 maps use a Black n white Hieght map , are you allowed to Colour this map file ? by using terragen ,which means you can could use terragen to render a basic coloured map . setting say RED colour for any hgt value above 10m and Blue below 1m and Yellow as 1m-10m , then render the map files ,then open it in CST editor again, and be able to see the map hieght of say 10m above sea level with a colour of land over 10m and a different colours for below 10m from sea level.
Then edit the yellow ring around the coastal area of the map.
Wasted typing , but might be of use.
CondorSoaring Flight sim has on the CD , the RAW to TRN convertor and the CST Height Values EDITOR
Then use the editor to change the coastline values to lower the sea level to correct height without distortions that you see on original nasa data files.
A TRN file can not be converted back to a BIN file
Comparison SMRT data from nasa satilite v new data - RAF_Wolf - 25.08.2009
Comparison SMRT data from nasa satilite v new data SMRT corrected and fixed missing patches
NOT fixed in 3DEM , but fixed manually by topo maps and ordinate survey coordinate mapping.
The Link you put into first post is the way to go with map making for IL-2 , please use this way and new data smrt files ,i have been saying this for along time , below is the proof to inspire you.....
First photo is GOOGLE EARTH snapshot of K2 mountain
The above picture is looking at K2 mountain in the CENTRE of the photo....from the corcordia Glacier , the K2 mountian is several miles away and looks small
but take note of terrian differences in this example of 4 photos.
Below is NASA DATA
SMRT ,,, FIXED missing holes or patches using 3DEM patch fix...
The K2 mountain is MISSING !!! it should be just above the left elevator as you look at the photo but NASA DATA has HOLEs of missing SMRT data and 3DEM fixes the holes by looking at the edges of the hole and averaging the height values to fill the GAP , so K2 no more
, you only see TWO very small SIDE bits of the Mountain , if i flew over this area i would see a FLATTENED bowl shape with these two tiny peaks on the rim of the bowl ......
Please NOTE this was a test map and
textures was
not important i was testing the terrian shape not the terrian textures
Also notice the flattening effect the 3dem fix patch has done to all the terrian surroundings , i think this is one reason IL-2 is Flat (ish) MAPS ! , all good excellent TEXTUREs but FLAT MAPS sorry have to say it..as it is.
Not seen a GOOD mountain yet in IL-2 , but soon maybe, if a map maker takes the time and listens and reads the words.
Next photo is REAL PHOTO taken SAME rough area as other photos in example K2 mountain Centre of view again .
As you can compare , GOOGLE EARTH appears FLATTENED but close to realistic terrian shape ,,, but copare NASA SMRT and its like looking at the moon and comparing with Florida
NOW that you can see the difference between google earth and NASA data fixed via 3DEM and a REAL PHOTO of K2 mountain , you can see the mistake mapmakers have been making and i do believe your NEW maps will have much BETTER results using the link you posted in first post ,,, granted not all areas are availible on the NEW data files but it can be added to a map to save 3dem Messing up a nice hardwork map makers efforts.
Below is a map of K2 mountian but NOT fixed in 3DEM , just downloaded straight from the new data files and made to a map...again look at terrian not textures terrian is important example .
Close enough id say
Especially when ALL IL-2 maps use the SECOND PHOTO EXAMPLE at PRESENT !!! we need to get more MAP MAKERS organised using BETTER DATA files , this will BOOST the REALISTIC look of a MAP !
Mapmakers take the time to make it look real with good TEXTURING but missed the most important TERRIAN shape point , textures do not make realistic MAPS ,,,,,TERRAIN CONTURES SHAPE do,,,,, the texture only gives impression or illusion of virtual world.
Mapmakers wont like that being said but ,,,if i made a map of a FLat plain desert look like THE ALPS from above with texturing , it can look great from above,,,,, just land on its TERRAIN and ask what they think then of your map again .
Please use the
new data smrt its much better and i personally think this example shows it better than words which im not good at doing.
Normally i dont bother posting much over here but i can see inspiration and it NEEDs proof to push the FUTURE MAPPING to better position than what we have currently.
I hope this post was worthwhile at doing that, task.
Now im going back into my RAF662 DEN
Good luck and please PASS the WORD !

Here is a link to NASA. This is the Asterdem database:
https://wist.echo.nasa.gov/wist-bin/api ... 728#SCROLL
You need to register and that is abit difficult at least for us no english speakers. but once you have solved that, possibilities are endless!!
Before this Norway/Sweden and Finland + Northern Russia was no no for mapmakers.
Edit: Sorry i did post wrong url. Now it should be fine

Mr Agracier and i have been struggling with this new satellitedata.
Mr Agracier managed to get 2 maps working. 1 that is covering Lofoten and it is based to 3dem data and another about Archangelsk area. His Lofoten area map is perfect, but the other one about Archangelsk area does not have lakes at all. Maybe the satellitedata (Asterdem) was photographed during winter and all the lakes and rivers were frozen at the time. That can be fixed with help of googlemaps in map_c.
I'm just learning the microdem and i will try ro make archipelago of Ahvenanmaa (

Just a look at the Archangel
