1/48 D3A1 "Val" Build Thread (amateur) - Romanator - 05.09.2009
Hi guys,
just thought I would show you all a bit of my 1/48 scale Hasegawa Val. It's not going to be as great as some of the work I've seen here, but it's a learning experience, and so I thought I would share some of it
I'm in college now, so I don't have many tools, but I still have the basics: knife, brushes, acrylics, glue. I purchased a spray can for the main color, but that's about all the air work that will be done as I don't have an airbrush. So, with this in mind, I will try not to butcher this $24 model too badly.
The box and parts:
(not the best work-station either, but it's something)

Just keep the not-in-use parts in the box and you'll be fine.

Hello friend, i made my Val, a year ago also in 1:48. Here is my link:

The site is i polish because i`m from poland but there are some pictures of my "baby". Take a look, maybe it will help you a liitle. I can say that Hasegawa is very good choice.

Of course, I was just spreading the parts out to show off the trees.

It's hard to see very well in the photos, but I see you did some nice paint chipping and weathering. Good work.

Some work in progress:
Base coat of green for the inside. It's a little light now, but I hope it will allow me to see the interior details better when the fuselage is closed up.
And some details:

Thanks, and your Hurricane and Spitfire are beautiful!

and you call this amateur?
- Romanator - 07.09.2009
Compared to other guys' work it is! :o Especially considering my track record of making opaque windows, glue where it shouldn't be, etc, etc.
But I suppose this one is shaping up rather nicely. Do you propose I edit the title? :???:

First major mistake for this build: I don't have any clamps, so I decided to use duct tape while the parts set. Unfortunately the glue seeped from the joints and bonded with the tape! Now the plastic has pits and scars, so now I'll have to try my hand at filling the damaged areas. This is why this is an amateur build!

Update:
I learned from my mistake and did the other wing differently:
This time the duct tape is ok since it's not touching any parts with glue.
My attempt to fix the mess I made. Not perfect, but it will do, it's the first time I've ever used putty:
Fiddly bits added that need to be painted.
