CPU strangeness... - =BOD=Thing - 05.10.2009

i have a dual core intel chip and its doing strange things, core 2 runs at about full tilt all the time and core 1 is running less than 20% unless it needs to take up the slack. Recently i tried to install a windows vista update and it failed miserably, so i had to use the vista disc and use system restore. After that it went ape ****. The computer is about three years old but i take real good care of it, put a fresh load of vista on it like 4 months ago, good drivers etc no problems till this. I am baffled by this new development... my computer is usually really good at multitasking but after the system restore it just sucks at it.

hope someone has some sage advice for me cause im lost. OH and it hasnt been overheated or dropped or anything like that...

HP Laptop DV9650us
Intel Mobile core 2 duo T5250 1.5ghz socket P (478)
2gb ram
2x 111gb HDD
nvidia 8600m GS

My mother has the exact same laptop for her regular use

The reason why there is full load on one core and less load on the other is partially due to this game is single threaded(single core game). You could try to enable the affinity to both cores but I am not totally convinced. It could help, but you may have microstutters that have plagued my machine for months. But it has been fixed my a recent driver fix for video card.

This is as far as I can go.

Could you please state more specifically about your problem about Vista and Restore?

its not the game specifically that's having the problem its my system, it is epic fail at this time. i think it might just be time for the recycle bin in the sky for my laptop...

If your one core is going at full tilt all the time even when no programs are in use you might have a virus working in the background so do a thorrow check of all programs listed in the prosses list (ctrl alt del -prosseses)
you might even want to try to do a visrus scan online as your virus scanner might be disabled even if it seems to be orking fine.
Or one or more programs might have a problem and are "hung" up
Do a reinstall of wista but try to download and install all servicepacks and install them before going online again after reinstall and also have a fresh and new dowenload of a antivirus program with latest updates avaiable.

Hope you get your putter up and going again.

Go to your power options and set the computer to "Plugged in all the time"
You are running one of Intels mobil processors and it will turn off or throttle back 1 or both cores to save power.

Yes, it's that simple.

There is/may be a setting in your BIOS as well to enable/disable this feature permanently.

i just said eff it and i re-installed vista, it seems to be fine now... but no on the virus and no on the power options but good idea on that one, i will keep it in mind if it happens again! Thanks for the responses guys.
