Memorandum - compatibility versions between different packs - pipis - 26.10.2009

I have got a huge request for the all admins, modders, mod sites owners etc. etc.

If you have to do it separately - and it seems you have to - please synchronize some versions between you to make it compatible on CRT=2 level.

Just to make e.g. AAA UI 1.4 the same as UP 1.9 or so.

People who like to get the newest stuff will follow the last versions of UI or UP, and they will play offline or find online servers who will handle them. Others, more conservative users, will stick with huger "stable" versions which should be COMPATIBLE between the packs. And it does not spoil the joy of some people who needs the eye-candies everywhere because a lot of graphical changes are in graphical files. For me COMPATIBILITY should stick: FM classes, java classes and the rest that might be checked with CRT=2 function.

Note that it means FM models that should be applied to new slots only. It will allow them to be shared between packs. It will allow also the map makers to CHOOSE if they allow the FM-modded planes to exists on their own designed missions.

I guess such an agreement between modders groups would help the most popular servers to have the same stable server packs installed, therefore - the majority of online players would be able to enter them anytime, without a need of starting the other game instance and/or copying 1000s of files and/or renaming mod directories.

Otherwise I guess the users community - just after the modders grups - will disperse into a bunch of separate ones, reducing the number of online active players, and - as a result - will kill IL2 after some time. Please do remember the cases of CFS2 and 3 products!

What are you all think about it?

It would be great if we could do it, but it is very hard to get everyone together and agree. Some roads have been made in regards to sounds and flight models, but it may be a while before we start seeing truly universal compatibility between different communities packs

Thoughts of a noob:

As a one-time microlight pilot I started flying a desk, i.e. Il-2 1946 and started looking on the web, not expecting very much since Il-2 1946 in itself is a somewhat dated simulator.

I was amazed by the world of (free) knowledge, the wealth of (free) software, the enormous amount of spare and free time that goes into campaigndesign, mods, sounds etc etc, and all for free.

That's a very impressive positive point.

Now then the other side of the medal:

I have collected 4 installs 409m, with AAA-UI 1.2, with UP 1.7, with HSFX v4 and one just with SAS-mod.act, latest SAS-buttons and a host of DGEN-campaigns (enjoyr, Boelcke).

Reading the forums at AAA, Ultrapack.net, M4T, SAS, checksix, aviaskins and what have you, I found that it is rather naive of me to think that it must be possible to unite all 3 or 4 convictions (religions?) and I fear that I shall not see such an event in the foreseeable future. Prove me wrong, please!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. Not at all. I regret that the AAA-believers, the UP and SAS and other believers can't get together and build one comprehensive modded game (it's Art, I tell you!)

To end on a lighter tone: you guys have brought me, former 1:48 model builder period '39-'45, much, much pleasure with all the planes I'm rather familiar with in plastic. This is much better. They fly!

As I understand it, the new FusionPack, with Up 1.8 is planning on being compatible with AAA. I'm glad to see some light amongst the different groups. They all seem to be Serving the community in different ways, for the good of all of us.. Big Grin

yup, unifying IL2 mod community and standardization of all available mod packs is main interest of AAA since policy change ( half a year ago) and we (AAA ) are actively involved in bringing that plan to life .

I'm happy to say that some significant progress has been achieved ( Ultrapack , SAS , C6 , AAA ...) but there is still a long road ahead of us i'm afraid .

Bless you! Hands up for the merge, at least of the main releases. Standardization rules! Smile

"something" was going wrong last year with the IL-2 community (better not say more...) but now the bad days are over.I had left the IL-2 community for a while, turning my attention to SFP1/WOE/WOV/WOI/FE etc. (which it much easier to mod) but I now I 'm back fully aware that I have to support these people that they spend their time driven only by their passion for planes, historical truth and they are fully aware of what historical flying sims are all about (apart from our love for planes), a tribute to all these airmen that gave their lives and a full understanding of the brutality of air war.
