Request For F-86 - VF711Merlin - 07.11.2009
I'm wondering if one of you great skinners out there could do an F-86 skin, like those used in the movie The Hunters?
I've seen alot of them close but no match.

It's my understanding that they used Sabres from the 51st FIW to help make the movie, so I would say that the ones Harpia Mafra and Highlander and Bo Nidle made are ones that were actually assigned to the wing.

What about these?
They're close.

Got those, just looking for one with black cowling and front part of canopy framework , just the same color scheme as the movie.

The skins look easy enough to paint Merlin.Do you have a photo editing program?I think a guy could paint a couple of cowls himself if he had a mind to.

Consider me the Village Idiot when in comes to skinning, the one thing I could never understand, when ever I tried to paint a plane it ended in a train wreck. lol.

I don't think I've ever seen that movie. No way those were real MiG-15's. To me, they looked like F-84's with swept wings. Does anybody know what planes those were?
Did you see when they had a close-up of the 'MiG-15' firing it's guns? Too funny. The F-86's looked real cool though.

The MiGs were F-84Fs. When that movie was made, MiG-15s were unavailable to the west.

Yeah, those look like F-84s, its a very old movie, look how young Robert Wagner is .

Thanks for that info, Grant. Do you mind if I ask you something? I always respect your opinions.
Did you see the formation of those 86's? Do you think they really flew that close in combat situations? I don't know that much about the Korean War era. In WWII, the combat spread was much wider apart, so they could see and cover eachother's six. In such a tight formation, I don't see how that would be possible.
*My apologies for hijacking the thread.

Sorry for butting in but IMO it's just a concession to the movie making art. Every aviation movie has had to do it to keep the action close to the camera view.

During the opening days of WWII, the British RAF were taught to fly that close. The pilots hated it. The German pilots had a formation (called the Finger Four?) that was MUCH more loose. This enabled them to watch each others tails. When flying as close as the F-86s were, the pilot has to spend all his time keeping in formation and can't scan the sky. Later the RAF and the USAAF adopted the German formation. As for the F-86s flying that close, when I was in the USAF, we used to see that formation usually only when the flight was coming over the base to land or on their way out to the MOA (Military Operating Airspace?). When in a combat area, they would adopt the looser formation to better cover the sky and each other.

Wha,wha, I'm being a cry baby for it
. Thanks guys!
