Tropical 109s filter caps - performance - II./JG27_Rich - 15.11.2009

Once 109s took off from the sandy desert floor those filter caps were turned to open. Why should this choke off 10% of the power? If it does let me see the data. In my video you can see in parts where the cap is open.

What's moved from maps mean? I don't put this in maps do I? Or is he from maps and the Z means he's falling asleep? I don't think this is a stupid topic :-?

That video is a good illustration of my other thread about wide open throttle engine smoke. Look at the the smoke trail. Big Grin

Take a good look at that picture at the bottom of the page

I did it to my planes, and yes,it does effect FPS rate...especialy if you have a bunch of planes in one place Smile

The tropical filter is not the cause of the AAA UI 1.2 G-2 / G-4 / G-6 Trops running at 1.3 ata. The FMs for those Bf 109s were specifically modeled to fly at 1.3 ata. If you bothered to do any speed / climb tests you would see that"10% of their power" is not "choked off". In fact some of their speeds are higher at 1.3 ata then the stock ones at the same power setting.

If you want to know why 1.3 ata then do some research and find the answers on your own - or you could just make stuff up like the above quote...

But why screw with the throttle if it makes no difference or so little difference it's not noticeable. Why drive me a a few other people nuts?

Sorry that was rude.

At the moment there is no way to simulate the opening/closing of the trop filter and hence the performance penalty (which was very limited) is not simulated. The trops though ARE restricted to 1.3ata and this is due to historic reasons. With delivery of the Bf-109G series came the new DB605 engine, which was still had teething problems (in particular diff gears and oil seals used to go). Many technical directives came out warning of such issues and many weren't taken seriously. The death of the famous ace Hans-Joachim Marseille (due to engine failure) then forced a ban on running the engine at 1.42ata boost. From then on, all Luftwaffe units were required to restrict output to 1292hp @ 1.3ata. This was lifted by mid 1943, well after the last 'Trop' variant came off the production line.

Hence when I made the Trop FMs, I placed this restriction in as these aircraft would have historically flown with power output restricted to 1292 at 1.3ata of boost. If you don't like to fly with this realistic feature in place, then you are welcome to select the non-trop variants Wink Or do what some aces did, and complain and fly a 109F Tongue

That's what I'm doing when I can and I knew that about the reduction gear too and Marseille.
