After an hour or so the game begins to freeze.... - RAF209_Slick - 06.12.2009
Got a problem. After an hour or so the game begins to freeze. I fly in DirectX. Open GL makes for freezeframes from the get go. I fly with the 1.8UP with the "5" Mods on for Fprgotten Skies and Wings of War. When I get out of the game even other programs like Outlook and Explorer run and refresh very slow. The computer only returns to normal when I reboot it.
When the above problem happens I look at Windows Task Manager and the Page File Usage bar is maxed, even after I am able to kill IL2.
I have:
Celeron CPU 2.53 GHz
1.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440
Windows XP
Any suggestions to help solve this issue would be appreciated. The answer may be a new machine, but I would hate to go that route if a few setting changes would work. Thanks.

possibly video card overheating
- stansdds - 06.12.2009
I had a similar issue years ago with a 6800 Ultra. Getting more air to the video card brought down my temps and the problem disappeared. Yours is an old card, makes me wonder how long it's been since you cleaned the dust and junk out of the heat sink and fan. Dust is a great insulator and will clog heat sinks and fans and render them nearly useless. If you use compressed air to clean, make sure you do not allow the fan to spin as it will generate an electric current that can back-feed to the power supply and motherboard and do some serious damage.

this really sounds like a heat issue, open you case and have a look at the heat sink for both the CPU and the VPU and have a look at the power supply and make sure the vents are not clogged, it does not take long for your heat sinks to look like this ,

Well a few weeks agao My computer kept freezing and going to a blank screen after like an hour on the computer. It turns out that the fan was faulty and the card was overheating.

I'd recommend getting a new graphics card. the MX440 was never great in its time, and is practically no good for today's games. pretty much anything on the market will be at least twice as good as that one.

Your must upgrade your computer, is impossible fly IL-2 in perfect settings with that computer, check sites like
www.tomshardware.com were you will find comparison charts, my sugestion: Intel e8400, 4GB DDR2 1066 and a GF275, a good machine and good price.

Thanks guys. I will crack open the case and check it out. But I think I will be looking into a new machine soon.

Yes, I agree with everyone who posted here. Likely overheating is the issue.
Some possible temporary things would be to get a cooling upgrade, increase your page file size, and reduce the demand on your RAM. There are actually many things that can be done to improve how IL-2 will be run in your computer. As a matter of fact, many things can contribute to freezes.
If you get a new computer, try to get one with SLI graphics technology. Go to the Alienware website for a better idea of the kinds of computers, such as with SLI, that will let you turn up all the nice graphics eye candy with good frame rates.

Hi, I just wanted to add a thought to all this.
Oleg Maddox has put a deadline on the release of Storm of War: Battle of Britain, which is late 2010. Perhaps one should consider a very powerful computer to be sure to handle SowBob. There is talk that the new sim will be Muli-core compatible-natively. I don't want to go into all the indicated details about the sim here, but it is safe to say that a nice ingame appearance of it will demand much more from a PC.
I wish you the best in all this.

Very true, but late 2010 is almost a year...and you know what happens in terms of PC tech in a year Smile
BTW Alienware was bought by Dell...im sure thats NOT a good thing

Well noted, "oddball'. However, there well be a limit to what anyone can get from any PC running IL-2. I advise a nice PC that one can upgrade in years to come. That is, unless you need the mobility of a laptop-the way I do. There are PCs now that make the most of IL-2 that is possible and will probably handle SoWBoB very well. One must guess the risks verses the costs, I suppose. You know what they say-"We'll see..."
