HSFX deletes your F'ing files - VonBarb. - 13.12.2009
Attention everyone...
Let this serve as a lesson for those of you who thought about doing what I just did : Don't do it.
So I was having some memory related issues and thought perhaps some files had been corrupted or whatnot, and so I figured re-installing the HSFX .sfs files could maybe help some.
So off I go to reinstall the package. I though 'hey, HSFX works with .sfs files, so why would they care what I have in my MODs folder ?'
Guess what... the first message I got from the auto installer read 'Deleting MODs folder'. Son of a...
So not only does HSFX install a bunch of miscellaneous mods the included readme doesn't begin to even poorly describe, doesn't let you choose which you want to use or not - and so the only way to remove a mod in the HSFX package is to short-circuit it with another mod modifying the same thing, which you need to place in your MODs folder - it also deletes your bleeding files.
For some reason, HSFX needs to make tabula rasa of folders it's not even supposed to use...
I lost dozens of Mbs worth of Mods, personal modifications and old mods I may never find again just because 'hey we're the face of IL-2 unification, we can do whatever we damn want'
So tell us, what's the reason ? Erase all that's been done before ? Kill the competition ?
Thanks for F'ing nothing HSFX...
Nico.

Quote:IMPORTANT : For user's with previous versions of The History Mod and any other Mod packages installed,
the Version 4.0 Installer will delete the previous versions Files and Mods folders and all files, as they are

Text from the 242 thread where the d/load link is so they do warn you of this

Come on guys. We all know that you only need to read the installation instructions if you don't know what you are doing. They should not expect experts to read them.
VonBarb, post a list if there are any old mods you cant find. I'm sure between us we can find them all.

VonBarb, have you tried a system restore? Before when I have f'cked up my il-2 installs, a simple system restore has brought me back to running on full speed
Hope you get sorted mate 8)

Read the F'ing readme. Simples.
- zaelu - 13.12.2009
If the installer deletes the MODs folder before installing the patch there is a chance that the patch files overwrites some of the files from the deleted MODs folder... thus you will lose them even if you use undelete plus (which is quite good btw)
But... is not HSFX fault... i mean:
the warning is in the readme,
the installer warns the user before actually starting the install (thanks for that... I didn't read the readme good either
)
it is a norm for a long time now to always back up your IL-2 folder before major installs or even prefer doing a clean install for every new MOD Pack (I have a clean 4.09m at the ready always and my mods are spread in 4 installs)
I can understand the frustration but... c'est la vie

Everyone that screws up always uses the same faulty reasoning. "I know what I'm doing, why do I need to read the instructions?".

That's a rather silly thing to say. I've been using mods for almost a year and I always read the instructions before installing. It's saved me quite alot of grief.

Unbelievable
An experienced user who doesn't duplicate valuable data. Reminds me of my time as a techie doing tele-support.
Desperate punter: "Help, I've lost all my files!"
Me: "Was there anything important amongst them?"
D P: "Yessss! Everything!"
Me: "Ah well, you'll have backed them all up then?"
D P: .............................
Me: "Whimpering won't help....."

You should rather thank yerself for neglecting to read the readme!

They are no longer needed, because the content is now all contained in Compiled SFS files.
You just let me be the judge of that... What if I don't care for some of the mods contained in the SFS files ? What if not
everything is included in those SFS ? So everything worthy of being used is in the SFS and the rest just doesn't count ?
Going to try that undelete proggy. Thanks a bunch VP !
If I don't remember to backup more often after
that...
Cheers

Before you try that mate I'd suggesta system restore. From using it a lot, I can say that it has restored everything back to normal
