[MOD] A little less conversation... v 2.0 - Checkyersix - 14.12.2009

Hi Everyone, especially offline players Smile

Here's a link to a new "speech" folder I've made, designed to reduce the constant chatter of the AI to a more realistic level:

http://www.mediafire.com/?oyg43o3izly

*Update* Instead of removing the files from your speech folder, I've replaced the offending chatter files with blanks. Simply unzip the new (1.44mb) file to your "MODS" folder and you're good to go. This should correct the memory errors some people were having.

The changes include:

- No more "This is (number)....I'M ON FIRE!!!!" - AI will now just say "I'm on fire!", etc... - they will still say "This is Zveno One" and the like, though.

- The AI backseat gunners have now grown a pair and won't complain about hard maneuvers.

- AI shouldn't complain about taking hits...AFTER it crashes into a mountain...

- The bomber pilots won't give you a cheeky "Hello little friends...So glad you could join us..." - they'll just say "Nice to see you.", because they're cool guys now.

- The AI won't check in with the tower before it lands and the tower won't tell it to abort a landing (umpteen-million times!). The tower will just say "You're cleared to land" - I think most players will know when its their turn.

If your hud messages are turned on, you'll still see who is saying what, but the actual chatter will be cut in half, at least. My idea was to make the AI talk like real pilots would - no formalities in the heat of combat, no immersion-killing pauses or changes in tone. I've read tons of after action reports where pilots didn't use proper radio lingo, or just called "break" to everyone in general - tough to pick out a tail-code at a mile away and three hundred mph while people are shooting at you...

I know most players don't even bother with turning the speech on, but I think that's because the AI is just so damn annoying, so I'm trying to correct that, and maybe make the game a little more fun offline.

Cheers,

CY6.

Did you do the speech yourself? I am using compans' RAF one and loving it, so have you re-done everything yourself?

No its the same speech files from the original game - I've just removed the more irritating ones.

In old IL2 there was "5 minutes to target" etc. messages that AI bombers used when were near target. it would be great to activate this old feature.

Can you say in what precise conditions ?

CY6, thanks a lot, will try it Big Grin

Tried it:

-no doubt, i don't miss the "this is five.....bailout bailout" and others

-BUT (yes it's almost always like that when i test something , sorry  ) the missing speech generates errors (can be seen via console, shift+tab), many errors, and those errors are bad for performance beacause they fill up memory. In my case, it results in not being able to laucnh another QMB mission after a few played (3do/paratrooper/russia/mono.sim not created, classical symptom). For others it may even freeze the game.

In order to work properly, instead of deleting the unwanted files, these should be replaced by "blank" ones (empty .wav files). This is a boring and time consuming process, though.

Anyway i stop using it because it has adverse effects on my PC, but if it works for you, don't hesitate to use it guys, it's really more immersive !

Well so far I haven't encountered any problems. I used to have blank sound files in place of some of those, but it was, in fact, boring and time-consuming to do. This is much easier. I really don't miss the inane chatter that used to fill the radio, especially the requests for landing, and the subsequent "go around" messages. Much better now.

My mistake. I'll work on a more memory-friendly version, although so far I haven't encountered that problem.

Could someone send me a blank .wav file in the same format that il-2 uses? I've tried other formats but they all create an audible squeek, for some reason. The shorter the better, like 0.1 seconds would be fine.

- rollnloop - 16.12.2009

Fr/actor1/height.wav is blank and correct format
