How to install and play IL-2 1946 for an idiot ?? - Deathsight - 16.12.2009
So, it's my very first time at trying to play IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 on a Windows 7, and when it comes to computers well, I'll only say I'm practically a complete idiot. I tried to first install it, then it wouldn't work. Then I tried compatibility but it just won't work either, at least when I try it on with being compatible with XP, I still have my Windows XP in another section on my computer and my IL-2 1946 is already installed and working fine, it's just a dual-boot but the XP section has just no internet possibility.
The first time I got this computer I'm using, Vista was pretty much already installed but I got Windows 7 later on. As you already know, when using Vista, it's just as if it never works.
So, can anyone tell me how to install it so it really works ?? I could eventually join some of you guys on the server if it really does work.
Thanks for your time.

I have to say...that makes no sense. If the computer has Internet access for Windows7, then it has to have it for XP. It's just a matter of having the chipset drivers installed for the networking.
As far as IL-2 and Windows7, well I don't have Win7, but my understanding is that if you install, or move IL-2 to a location that is not in Program Files or My Documents, it should run fine.

If you are installing under Vista then for a modded version to work you needed to install in C:\Games not C:\Program Files. This gets around various "protection" systems in Vista which prevents the Mod Installation overwriting files. I have no experience of Windows 7 but I guess it works in a similar way if you have been having problems.
Just to summarise the installation sequence:
Install IL2 1946 from DVD
Apply the official patches for 4.08m and 4.09m
Then if you want mods install HSFX 4.1 onto an unmodded 4.09m version.

Yeah, the Windows 7 system on my computer was installed over a Vista I previously had, but the computer was also built in a factory because I had to put up with a budget, I especially wanted something really about longevity and not spending buying parts all the time.
I'll give it a try but I'd like some advice from people with more experience with the Windows 7 on how to make it work if possible.
Sorry about being so picky but I just want it confirmed.

Well, I upgraded from XP 32 bit to Win7 64bit and IL2 works fine - you can carry on using your old install unchanged, or install it all again.
You can copy your old install directory from Windows.old (if you upgraded to IL-2) to Program Files (x86), or you can simply run it from that directory - you'll need to find the il2fb executable, select properties, choose the Compatability tab, and select "Use XP Service Pack 3 Mode" and "Run as Administrator". That worked for me.
If you want to run a clean unmodded version of IL2:1946, i.e it still wants the DVD, then you need to get the SecuROM diagnostic tool and run the upgrade to patch the security software - this is also what you'll need to do if you need a clean install of 1946.
I wanted a clean install to upgrade to HSFX, and all of this worked fine - provided you make sure you run everything as "administrator", even if you're logged in as an Adminstrator.

I already tried it, but I seem to have missed something, it doesn't even work right now in my case.
It seems to be about a d3d8.dll somewhere on my computer, but I've got no idea what it is.

I have recently rebuilt my home system to Windows7 Enterprise 64bit. As was stated earlier . . make a GAMES directory and put your "entertainment" programs there. One more thing you will need to do with 1946 after you have it installed (or at least I did). My TrackIR just would not run. Once I gave the main EXE ADMIN rights (click the "run as administrator" box from the preferences off the shortcut or the exe) my TrackIR finally worked.
Go figure!
I'm just a bit befuddled as to which version is going to become the favored ONLINE one (HSFX or SAS). Sheesh. It was easier when it was only AAA.
NOTE : my TrackIR also has the "Run as Admin" ticked.
NOTE1 : The Teamspeak Overlay (
http://www.projecttint.com/teamspeakoverlay.php) works with Windows7 too! But to get it to install you have to trick it. When you install it . . be sure you are running as administrator (r-click and select "run as administrator" on the install exe). Otherwise it will fail and abort with a wrong OS error.
EDIT - BlackJack - I just re-read your error message closer. Did you install the latest DirectX and your correct video drivers? I recall getting something similar to that with my first game I tried . . . and it was the lack of all the DirectX drivers.

I'm afraid I haven't so far, so where should I go to get it ??

Hmm . . ya should have been able to search for DirectX!
In either case . . here is the URL for the re-distributible.

SEARCH functions are your friend. Learn how to use them. Google (

Hope this fixes yer issues!

Thanks a lot.
Sorry for the trouble, but I'll try it on.
I really am an idiot with computers...
