Bomb detonation on aircraft Crash Mod request - jdknasa98 - 19.12.2009

)I would like a mod where if you crash your airplane any bombs will explode. I crashed the B-29 Silverplate with a nuke onboard and nothing happened except a typical boom. Is there any way to have the bomb go off as well?

Well, historically, bombs were not armed unless they had dropped from the plane and the spinner had completed a specific number of revolutions. The Little Boy and Fat Man were specially modified to protect against the possibility of a detonation due to a crash by one of the cheif technicians after he saw a B29 crash on takeoff and was horrified at the thought of the nuke destroying their own airbase. For this reason the nukes were armed in the air by a technician, long after leaving base.

the "fat man" type is protected against detonation by design.

the little boy type on the other hand by design is a almost suicidal bomb as it can go off by itself when the two parts inside that form the critical mass are put together by an accident... or even when the plane has to make a forced landing in salty water this would have caused a nuclear detonation.

there was the fact, taht the ignitors which force the two parts together on ignition where only placed during flight to protect the plane on takeoff but there where scenarios even then when mechaical failure could have caused a mis-detonation.

that is why only one little boy ever was built and used, all other types where the safe-to-handle fat man types.

Other bombs - Guest - 20.12.2009

You cant just talk about atomic bombs only you need to take in many DIFFERENT :!: types of bombs aswell because every bomb isn't atomic you know...Just saying

- santobr - 20.12.2009

I think could be cool if we could to arm the bombs in the air to make kamikaze attacks.
Because when the plane hits a ship, the damage is caused only by the plane.

santobr.

- jdknasa98 - 20.12.2009

Yeah I agree with santobr. Thats what i meant. And I know that there are many different types of bombs, I was just using the nuke as an example. I like Kamikze attacks and if you have a 2000 pound bomb onboard it doesn't do anything when you crash.

I also agree with santobr and jdknasa98 Big Grin

Well jdknasa98 has seen a lot of Hollywood movies?
Bombs do not arm automaticly due to a crash and detonate.
If the detonator does not go, the bomb will most likely not explode. Of course there are exceptions to the rule,
but these are rare.
Also in the case of a split open bomb casing, you have good chances that the tnt will just burn
and not explode.
I know that from experiance, as it used to be my job defusing and destroying WWII amunition during my time in the military.

Drop it before you hit with a 0 second delay.....

Yes you could just do that

- Potenz - 21.12.2009

and what about bombs exploding by Mg and cannon fire???

- jdknasa98 - 21.12.2009

Exactly, I read that a guy shot a 500 pound bomb om a Japanese kamikaze plane with a standard WWII machine gun to save his ship. That would be awesome if it was simulated in Il2. Just think about, you fire a machine gun, it hits a 1000 pound bomb and BOOM! The airplane hurtles toward the ground in a thousand pieces.Smile

- Chappi - 21.12.2009

Yeah but that's partially madmans talk.
Look, to do this you have to start messing with java.
Apart from that, imagine attacking american or japanese aircraft carrier with all it's aaa.
Then also take note about 88 flak cannon's that produce massive shrapnel damage.
That gives you almost no chance of getting close to enemy ship, because flak's and if not flaks, then other AAA will almost always hit your underwing bombs.

That is a good idea, but in-game it would be pretty annoying after some time.
Like that engine warm-up that takes place in HSFX or UP ( I don't know in which one, excuse my ignorance ) - it is realistic, but hell this is a game and if we will make it 100% realistic, then why don't we go to nearest airfield and try to fly on our own?

Basically the bomb thing on crash is a perfect idea in my opinion - I hate the way that my fighter crashes into the ground with the same effect as Pe-8 with FAB 5000.

But the machine gun to bomb explosion could be, let's say - 50/50 chance of happening. You know what I mean, so you won't be blown to pieces on every possible occasion, but only under serious fire.

My five cents Smile

I agree with Chappi on most/all of what he just said.
