Ardennes Spitfire XIVe CW action (ntrk) - vraeddie - 04.01.2010

!s

Going through some of my tracks, I found this one in particular that was quite special for me. It was in a mission (DGEN), during the battle of the bulge. Simply, this was the best engagement I've ever had. (Offline only. South African internet sucks. Terrible latency basically limits me to offline play by default.)

Some background. Normally when I take off, I fly to the first WP, then set auto pilot. I then switch through the hostiles (ctrl+F2) and friendlies (shift+F2) to see if there is anything interesting going on. In this particular mission, me and a wing man were to do a recce. After wheels up, I set AP and started flipping through the cameras. The Jerries, I saw, had 6 Me-262 Jabo's up, with 2 FW-190A9's for high cover. Suddenly, through the clouds, dove 4 Tempests. 3 Me-262's fell after their first pass. The remaining 262's jettisoned their loads and went on the offensive with the 190's in tow. 1 Tempest was then vaporized by a 262, itself then shortly taken out by one of the remaining 3 Tempests. A 3rd Tempest was then heavily damaged by a burst from one of the 190's, who in turn fell quickly to the remaining 2 Tempests. The hunt was on.

The last pair 262's, repeatedly made attack runs on the wounded Tempest, who was attempting to RTB. The other 2 Tempests, was in hot pursuit and managed to get some good altitude. They managed to draw the attention of the 2 Me-262's, which is when I noticed (Yes I have labels on.) 2 Spits in the distance. I stupidly got so distracted by the melee that I forgot about my flight. The track, as you will notice, picks up where I disengage auto pilot.

I quickly latched onto the tail of a bandit. I attempted an ambitious - read buck fever - deflection shot, which obviously missed. He was however slowed down, after attempting to engage one of the Tempests. So, me having a generous speed advantage at that moment, nosed up and rolled over after him as he attempted to dive out and extend. A short burst took off his wing. Little did I realise the real fight had just begun.

Re-acquiring the remaining Me-262, I pulled out of the dive and tried to get as much altitude I could with the airspeed I gained. This was follow by a several minute dance of death, as the Me-262 attempted repeated passes on the 2 Tempests, with me and my wing man in tow clawed for more altitude and taking shots at the bandit when the opportunity presented itself. My attempts to gain a perch quickly was in proving to be futile, as his speed just kept on putting him well out of reach. You will notice I did get desperate taking stupid long range bursts with the .50's, hoping to flame an engine. I did manage to score a hit with the 20mm from a steep deflection, as he was diving under me towards the Tempests. However, again with me climbing, I managed to setup a good angle. The 262, out of a zoom climb, winged over to right, preparing another pass at the Tempests. I placed myself perpendicular to his course and fired a long burst that hit the mark. His right wing tore off and down he went.

Thanks vrelut for the modded RAF campaigns or else this fight would not have happened. Smile

Here's the link to the track. It should work fine with UI1.2, UP1.8 and HSFX4.1. My realism settings are basically all on, except labels, black/red outs (AI can't black out, so I have it off.) and speed bar.
