Commentary on Storm of War

First, I would like to congradulate those of you who have kept the discussions and debates at AAA civil. These mature posts show that the modding community will continue to grow.

Now, to get to the Topic at hand, I will share with you what I know. From firsthand, I can assure everyone that Oleg Maddox is working with the modding community to improve the product of 1C: Maddox Games. Integration of modding communities with the company will continue to develop.

#1) The price of releases has been and will continue to be reasonable and affordable.

#2) The next generation of combat flight simulation 3D graphics engine will provide irrestible appeal to almost every current IL-2 modder.

#3) Detailed features of Storm of War will be far advanced over IL-2.

#4) Most, if not all, new content will be released in mass. All large releases will be paid. This means that you will get much for your money.

#5) Input from the modding communities, especially AAA, will continue to grow for consideration by 1C: Maddox Games. Some modding community content may be included in future releases.

#6) The release of such variants such as IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey has proven that 1C market is growing. The company's diversification of products will continue to expand to reach more market share.

This is a ten-day poll.

Feel free to comment.

I believe less popular. It is taking way too long to make BOB which was scheduled for late 2007 release.

lol.. how long is a piece of string?

I don't really think it is only playing the game that has made Il-2 so popular and long-lasting in its appeal. It has more to do with the fact that people can more or less easily change it themselves or work on certain aspects of the game, by for instance making skins, maps or music files or other things ...

Take away that ability or make it far more complicated than now and a new game will certainly become less appealing, regardless of its graphic excellence or price.

If all one can do with the new game is to fly around in aircraft, well then after a while the attraction will wane and it will become another game sitting on the shelf.

And with some 200 different flyable aircraft available now for the game, I wonder how that will ever be matched.

Besides, it is just now with the availability of recent high-end processors that Il-2 has come into its own. With the new game, I fear processing power will once again fall far short of what will be promised graphic wise and it will be another 4 to 5 year wait before systems catch up.

i think eventually it'll be bloody amazing when people have machines to run it on high settings, and the they've more aircraft, and of course the engine will allow them to branch into a broader period. I reckon it could become the ultimate combat flight sim, it could combine ww2 and ww1 and korea and vietnam and later rather well.

But it'd take many years and many dedicated people to let its content overtake IL2. I should think they'll live in tandem for quite a while, but it does stand to reason that eventually IL2 will retire to a life of tweed jackets and armchairs by the fire with a good whisky and a pipe to read the Times, whilst storm of war will continue the running of the estate so to speak. It's just that IL2 seems to be unwilling to retire for quite some time.

I believe it will be more popular after maybe a year of its release because people may not have the computer, money, or just want to wait and see what it looks like.
After all that people will start gradually buying it then it probably will have lots of players in the long run compared to IL-2.

Regarding Content. I disagree. When Il-2 Sturmovik came out, EAW had every posible theater and over 300 planes. Still tgh e) flyables in Il-2 were more apealing, even in an obscure theater not wel known to the west. Still In my personal experience , teh first time Y flew Il-2 Demo I was Hooked and never could go back to EAW. I was the CO of a squad Wing at teh time, And despite that I could never ever bring myself to go back to EAW. the leap was son big, the features so enchanced that going back to fly EAW wa sno fun, not inmersive and plane dull...

Teh same happen when Forgotten Battles came out. many squadmates could not run it, still those of us whou could, could not manage to stay with teh old engine. The inmersion, teh gratification was so much that we siemply HAD to go fodward.

I belive Strom Of War engine will be so enchanced that it will be hard to go back to Il'2 1946, after experiencing Bob

depends on system specs; I'm having an A $ $ of a time running Rise Of Flight even with the new patches. I still get ROF.exe not responding and if I get into a dog fight the taxed already system 2 core E8600 is
over taxed cpu @ 100% or more and results in the system (Program not respinding).

trk ir lags really bad when 3 or more planes come into view the FPS are fine just tir lags badley.

Some conversation has been over SoW to be fully multi core supported-do you believe this?

Oleg himself has said that the Storm of War engine will utilise multi core power from launch, and that it will be possible to increase the number of cores supported as computing hardware evolves.

BoP isn't the same company though.

Oleg will conquer if given a chance.

I'm going to say less popular, but for a time, maybe a year or two. Graphics may be much improved, but they would require a powerful and expensive PC and I've only recently built a rig capable of maxing out Il-2. And unless Oleg's team makes miracles, I expect SoW to be like every other sim initially, that is poorly optimized. Also, the price is subjective to where you live and the economic situation in your country; I'm going to pass on SoW for the first year after release.

Lastly (yeah, I know, blasphemy!) BoB just isn't so interesting for me as a setting as Il's Eastern Front. There have been a slew of Western Front flight sims of varying quality, yet Il-2 is the sole sim that lets you fly over Eastern Europe and has countries like Romania, Finland or Hungary.

So, in time, after the community has patched up SoW and I can afford it (plus a PC that will handle it) and there's more content for it, I'll migrate too.

- Guest - 07.01.2010

Nah, IMHO it will be more popular than Il-2. If I'm right, they have been running SoW on dual cores w/ 9800's and the like so most people will probably be OK running it. Also in a way it's a revamp of Il-2 (but focusing on the BoB theatre) so it sohuld have a massive fan-base. Also, we are only really loking at s as the audiece. If Oeg's boast ring true, SoW will be used by allmajorsim copanes and also by film-makers to get the right physics and effects. If everything he has said comes true, then I can see SoW becoming the only flight-sim base in the future Wink

Indeed so ... as usual with most WWII flight sims it's going to be Spitfire and Bf-109 ... yet again. Great planes to fly and all, but they have become so ho-hum that I never feel the need to take one up. The real attraction of Il-2 has been all those little known, odd looking, weird and often ramshackle aircraft that we now have. That is adventure and fun!

I know all about the marketing requirements and such that virtually pushes one towards doing BoB stuff to make a venture profitable, but it does sound all so predictable. And Western Europe and the UK specifically is so flat and uninteresting a terrain to fly over ... how long before there will be any good maps for SoW? And how hard will it be to make them if everything in the new game is going to be more complicated graphics-wise? Even now it takes quite an effort to get a map made. How much more so for SoW?
